We’re into a new month, and the list of new PS5 and PS4 games due to be released during the week beginning March 4, 2024, has gotten bigger. There are plenty of different genres to occupy all types of gamers, but the highlights of the week are the latest installment in the WWE 2K franchise and the third game in the Outlast series, which finally makes the jump to consoles.

A total of 26 games are coming to PS5 this week, while PS4 players get a shorter list of 18 titles. The biggest of them all is WWE 2K24, which is available at the end of the week. However, those who purchase the Deluxe or 40 Years of WrestleMania Editions can get access to the game three days earlier on March 5.

The Outlast Trials, the prequel to the first two games, dumps up to four players in the middle of a horrifying Cold War experiment as they fight to survive. If you fancy something a bit more sedate, As Dusk Falls brings the story of two families whose trajectories collide in the Arizona desert to PS5 and PS4. Elsewhere, there is the tactical RPG Unicorn Overlord, or new off-road adventure Expeditions: A MudRunner Game.

While PC player are currently getting to play the Early Access version of Red Barrel’s The Outlast Trials, console owners, especially those who are fans of the Outlast series, have been left with pouting lips and longing eyes as they await confirmation the multiplayer title will be officially heading their way. Now, the Outlast Trials PS5 and PS4 versions have been confirmed, but there is a slight catch.

The Outlast Trials PS4 and PS5 versions are coming

Director Alex Charbonneau penned a developer update on Steam to fill players in on what coming for the game on PC, but also had a bit on the state of console versions. The good news is they are coming, and not just for the current gen. The bad news is they aren’t coming that soon.

“We are currently actively working on fulfilling a major request: bringing the game to consoles. This means launching on PS5, Xbox S/X, and older gen (PS4/XboxOne) while enabling crossplay with PC,” said Charbonneau. “Our aim is to ensure that the unique social experience of The Outlast Trials can be shared across platforms, despite the technical complexity it requires. Our progress is promising, but we can’t provide a console release date or guarantee universal crossplay just yet. Originally targeting 2023, we are now eyeing an early 2024 console release due to the challenges faced by our small team.”

So understandably, it’s a lot of work for a small team, but it is working hard to get console players in on the brutal trials, and to have them able to play with others.

The Outlast Trials is a co-op multiplayer sequel to the previous Outlast games in name only. It sees anywhere between one and four players participate in a brainwashing test facility’s cruel and barbaric games of psychological and physical torture. It’s still about you being largely helpless, but the environments can be used to aid your success in the trials.

The game has picked up a lot of positive feedback on Steam, and Red Barrels is taking on player feedback ahead of a full launch.

The Outlast Trials launched on Early Access for Steam on May 18, but many fans are awaiting a PS5 release date. Here’s what we know about a PS5 release date for the cooperative horror game.

When is The Outlast Trials coming to PS5?

There is currently no PS5 release date for The Outlast Trials. While the previous games in The Outlast series were released on PS4, The Outlast Trials is only available on PC.

The Outlast Trials early access is only available on PC from May 18, 2023, but there is still a chance the game will launch on PS5 for its full release. On Red Barrels’ official Twitter account, they stated they “are working to have The Outlast Trials be playable on as many platforms as possible.”

While this should mean that PS5 owners should be able to play The Outlast Trials eventually, there will be no early access version.

Red Barrels have confirmed there will be cross-platform play for the full release, although you cannot transfer your progression. This means if you start playing The Outlast Trials on PC, you won’t be able to pick up where you left off if you switch to PS5 later on.

The Outlast Trials, the third title in the Outlast series of survival horror games, received its first gameplay trailer showcasing some of its cooperative elements. Developer Red Barrels revealed the footage through gamescom 2021’s Opening Night Live event, teasing some of the enemies that players will get to meet in the upcoming game.

Set in the Cold War era, The Outlast Trials puts players in the shoes of a test subject of the mysterious Murkoff Corporation. According to the trailer, the corporation is subjecting players to “therapy” in the most inaccurate sense. Horrifying enemies, not unlike those in past Outlast games, fill the testing grounds that players must clear. The official description of the game states that players will be able to take on the challenge “alone or in teams to survive with their sanity intact.”

Furthermore, the gameplay trailer shows off a few interactions between players. One moment shows a player jumping across a gap while another player helps them get over safely. In another instance, we see that players can set down land mines and throw items to distract and damage enemies. Though, whether or not we’ll be able to kill them permanently is an entirely different question.

Additionally, the official description confirms that The Outlast Trials is set in the same universe as past Outlast games. While we’re still not sure how exactly the pieces will fit together, the prospect of a cooperative Outlast game is bound to interest both new and returning fans.

Unfortunately, Red Barrels has not yet announced the game’s platforms or release date. The original Outlast released for PC and PlayStation 4 in 2013, while its sequel Outlast 2 released for Xbox One and Nintendo Switch as well. The previous teaser trailer was also revealed via PC Gaming Show, which likely means that the game will at least come to PCs.

Late last year, developer Red Barrels announced a brand-new entry in the Outlast universe, The Outlast Trials. Then, the key piece of information concerned four-player co-op capabilities. But the most recent bit of news has a far more unnerving hook to it. Apparently, the game’s test subjects, including the player-character, will have night-vision tech installed onto their craniums. A new teaser trailer hints at as much, while also sharing the title’s 2021 release window.

Red Barrels showcased the new look during this past weekend’s PC Gaming Show. While much of the trailer is cinematic in nature, there does exist a tinge of gameplay near the end. It does not last long, though, since the character is quickly dispatched by hulking, sledgehammer-wielding figure.

In showcasing the above teaser trailer, Red Barrels also shared more details about the story behind The Outlast Trials. This Cold War-set adventure sees human test subjects “involuntarily recruited” by the Murkoff Corporation. The tests themselves center on advanced brainwashing and mind control methods. Test subjects, and by proxy players, will find themselves pushed to the brink, their endurance, morals, and sanity all hanging in the balance. Maybe things won’t be so overwhelming in four-player co-op, though? (Yeah, right.)

As of writing, it seems The Outlast Trials is only confirmed for PC, given its appearance on the PC Gaming Show. However, neither the trailer nor Red Barrels’ YouTube description for said trailer feature concrete details about specific platforms. Such information is likely to emerge as 2021 draws near.

This past Halloween, Red Barrels shared a teaser image that hinted at another venture in the Outlast universe. It should come as no surprise, then, that a third Outlast title is indeed in the works. Titled The Outlast Trials, this new adventure is different from previous entries, however, in that players will have the option to experience the horror with up to three friends in four-player co-op. For now, The Outlast Trials, set to launch on consoles and PC, lacks an official release date.

The Outlast Trials is set in the Cold War era, where players will take on the role of test subjects. Currently, the title remains in the “early stages of production.” According to Red Barrels’ press release, production is now in the process of “ramping up.” As such, it could be a while before fans get their hands on whatever the new experience may entail.

While The Outlast Trials will indeed offer players a four-player co-op experience, fans will be able to navigate the world on their own. At the time of writing, though, details about what new terrors Red Barrels has in store remains under wraps. In fact, apart from the mention of test subjects and the Cold War setting, nothing is known about the game’s core premise. Given Outlast’s rather extensive lore across the first two games and expansions, it seems anything is possible.

According to David Chateauneuf, Red Barrels’ Co-founder, this Outlast spinoff “will bring fear and anxiety to millions of players.” Considering the previous two Outlast experiences, there seems no reason to doubt him. The goggles the characters are wearing could also potentially hint at a VR experience? Though Red Barrels hasn’t officially announced platforms aside from a generic “consoles and PC” line.
