With February coming to an end tomorrow, Sony has revealed the four PlayStation Plus Essential tier games for March 2024.

In a PlayStation Blog post, Sony gave fans a look at the diverse lineup of games that they’ll be able to download in the coming month. Those titles are:

  • EA Sports F1 23 (PS4, PS5)
  • Sifu (PS4, PS5)
  • Hello Neighbor 2 (PS4, PS5)
  • Destiny 2: The Witch Queen (PS4, PS5)

It’s worth noting that you need Destiny 2 in order to play Destiny 2: The Witch Queen, though Destiny 2 can be downloaded for free on the PlayStation Store. These titles will become available on Tuesday, March 5, and will remain available for download until Monday, April 1. PlayStation Plus members can also grab an exclusive cosmetic bundle for The Finals, which includes two epic outfits and 12 epic weapon skins.

Here are some details about each of this month’s games:

F1 23 first released last year and was developed by Codemasters. This installment features a story mode titled “Braking Point 2,” which saw the return of characters from the first Braking Point. The game received largely positive reviews from across the industry.

Released in 2022, Sifu is a third-person martial arts beat ‘em up set in contemporary China. Players take the role of the son or daughter of a murdered martial arts master and embark on a quest for revenge against the men responsible. After having their throat cut and being left for dead, a magical talisman revives them. However, it has the side effect of accelerating the protagonist’s age.

Hello Neighbor 2 is the sequel to the popular stealth horror game that first made waves in 2017. The sequel dropped in late 2022 and followed a reporter named Quentin as he stealthily explores individuals’ houses to uncover dark secrets about the town of Raven Brooks.

Finally, Destiny 2: The Witch Queen is a major expansion to Bungie’s first-person shooter game. Released in February 2022, The Witch Queen introduces players to the fearsome Savathûn and features new missions, maps, gear, and more.

Sifu free on PS Plus in March

Sony will announce March’s PS Plus Essential games soon, but one of the titles leaked early. According to a report, next month’s free lineup likely includes the martial arts action game Sifu.

Sifu may be one of next month’s PS Plus Essential games

This news comes from leaker billbil-kun, who shared the news on Twitter and Deallabs. While they didn’t have any information to share about the other two games, they believe Sifu will be the main attraction. As with all leaks, this should be taken with a grain of salt. However, billbil-kun has been a reliable source in the past.

Sifu free on PS Plus in March

As for the other titles, fans have speculated on games ranging from Forspoken to God of War: Ragnarok. However, if Sony intends for Sifu to be next month’s headliner, it seems unlikely that the other two will be that high profile. Either way, fans will know for sure when Sony announces the PS Plus March lineup on February 28. Whatever the games end up being, PS Plus Essential subscribers can claim them from March 5 to April 2.

This sets the stage for Sifu’s most unique gameplay mechanic. Every time the player-character dies, the talisman ages them up several years. The protagonist gets stronger after each resurrection, letting their strikes deal more damage. However, each revival also reduces maximum health. The talisman also has a limited number of uses, after which point the protagonist loses the ability to revive.

Resistance: Retribution Has PS4, PS5 Trophies on PS Plus Premium

PSP classic Resistance: Retribution will have trophies when it releases as part of PS Plus Premium’s February 2024 lineup. Developer Bend Studio confirmed as much, making the shooter the latest first-party Premium classic to support trophies on the PS4 and PS5.

Resistance: Retribution trophies have yet to be revealed

Although Resistance: Retribution will be out as soon as next week on Tuesday, February 20, the game’s trophy list has yet to be revealed. Trophy lists are typically picked up from Sony’s servers ahead of release by sites like PSNProfiles, so we’ll keep our eyes peeled and our readers posted.

Over on Twitter, Bend Studio also confirmed that Resistance: Retribution will support PS3 controller layout.

Resistance: Retribution released in 2009 exclusively on the PSP. The game has garnered a cult following over the years, with fans requesting a re-release. The PS Plus Premium classic was originally leaked years ago, but was only just announced.

“Experience Resistance: Retribution, originally released on the PSP and now enhanced with up-rendering, rewind, quick save, and custom video filters,” Sony wrote. “Fueled by vengeance, former British Marine James Grayson intends to destroy the Chimeran conversion centers at any cost. Enlisted by the European resistance, The Maquis, he soon learns the Chimera have evolved a new method of converting humans.”

PS Plus Premium Game Trials

PS Plus Premium members, specifically those who have a PS5, can enjoy chunky game trials for two of 2023’s major video games: Alan Wake 2 and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. While Alan Wake 2’s free trial is live, players will have to wait until next week to give Spider-Man 2 a shot.

New PS Plus Premium game trial lengths offer a good look at the games

Alan Wake 2’s PS Plus trial is three hours long. For those who haven’t been following the game, Alan Wake 2’s main story can be beaten in under 20 hours so this trial is a decent-sized slice. Spider-Man 2’s game trial, which will go live on Tuesday, February 6, will be two hours long. Its main story is roughly the same length as Alan Wake 2’s (17-18 hours, depending on playstyle).

It’s unclear how long the trials will be available but Sony says Spider-Man 2’s trial will be available for a limited time only, calling it a “Valentine’s celebration” on the PlayStation Blog. All campaign progress and trophies from trials carry over to full games, if players proceed to purchase them.

As a reminder, PS Plus Essential’s monthly games for February will also go live on Tuesday, the 6th.

Sony has rolled out a PS Plus discount offer for new and returning subscribers in some regions, making Extra cheaper than Essential for the time being. The percentage of discount seems to vary between users, but Extra still comes out cheaper than the most basic tier.

New PS Plus discount offer lasts until February 11

Users across Reddit and ResetEra have reported receiving more than 40% off of PS Plus Extra. The discount has been offered to new as well as returning subscribers with lapsed memberships. We can confirm that members across Europe, North America, and Australia have been offered the discount, with an end date of February 11.

Sony has a strange way of rolling these offers out so if you’re unable to see the discount using the web store, we advise trying via the PS App. If you don’t see the discount at all then you either have an active membership or you’re just one of the unlucky ones. Discounts are often applied randomly, but this one seems to have been rolled out more widely.

It’s unclear why some users are getting up to 44% off while others are getting only 40% off. Here are examples of two different regions’ offers:

The first month of the new year is already through, which means Sony has announced the three PlayStation Plus Essential February 2024 games. This month, three new games join the roster of PS Plus titles, featuring Square Enix’s Foamstars, Rollerdome, and Steelrising.

All the PS Plus Essential February 2024 games

All three games will be available as part of PS Plus Essential from February 6, 2024 until March 4. The three games we’ll be getting in just a few days are:

Foamstars is a new 4v4 online party shooter, where players will use foam to build terrain, create slippery surfaces, and run around trying to defeat enemies. Featuring a unique cast of athletic characters, the game also features a ton of different modes to try out.

Rollerdome hails from the critically acclaimed studio Roll7 and is a third-person shooter that throws players into the chaotic sport of Rollerdome, where they’ll have to utilize their shooter-skating talents to take down enemies to stay on the battlefield.

Finally, Steelrising is an action RPG set in an alternate history Paris where the French Revolution was suppressed by a robotic army. Players will be put in the shoes of Aegis, an automaton who must fight through the robot horde in order to gain freedom.

February 6 will also see the introduction of the new PS Plus exclusive Fall Guys Icons Packs, which will unlock a handful of PlayStation-themed costumes, emotes, and patterns for players to use in Fall Guys. The items included in the pack are:

Sony Talks PS Plus, Says Cloud Is Better Than Subscriptions

Sony Group CEO Kenichiro Yoshida has expressed his satisfaction with PS Plus offering, stressing that cloud streaming is more valuable than “all-you-can-eat” type subscriptions. Yoshida made his remarks in a November 2023 talk with Norges Bank Investment Management, which surfaced online and started making rounds this week.

Kenichiro Yoshida on PS Plus, cloud gaming, and competition

Yoshida said that a large number of players tend to play one game at a time, which is why PS Plus is designed to offer a hybrid solution of sorts where players have a choice between having access to a large back catalog of games as well as purchasing new games.

“People usually play one game at a time,” Yoshida said (via Insider Gaming). “So all-you-can-eat type of many games may not be so valuable compared with video streaming services. So we’ll have a kind of balanced or hybrid service on PlayStation Network: a subscription as well as pay-per-content.”

Elsewhere, Yoshida was quizzed about Microsoft’s recent acquisition of Activision Blizzard, his response to which was quite a departure from Jim Ryan‘s — the outgoing PlayStation CEO. “Healthy competition is necessary for the game industry to grow and at Sony we believe it is important to provide gamers with different options to play,” Yoshida replied.

PS Plus discount

Sony is currently running a targeted marketing campaign, offering PS Plus membership discount to select users. How exactly the campaign is targeted isn’t clear, much to players’ chagrin. Even the percentage of discount applied seems to vary.

New PS Plus discount offer expired on January 30

Reports of the random discounts first emerged last week, when players reported receiving 35% off of 3-month and 12-month membership plans for all three PS Plus tiers: Essential, Extra, and Premium. Most of the people who reported receiving the email seem to be returning members whose previous membership expired some time ago.

However, not all returning members are getting the discount offer, and some have even reported being offered only 25% off of the 3-month and 12-month plans. All recipients have until January 30 to make up their minds.

This targeted campaign has upset quite a few players, many of whom said that they were loyal subscribers for a number of years before letting their memberships expire due to the extortionate increase in price.

“Not only existing customers get nothing, but also majority of new and returning customers get nothing, apart from few randomly chosen,” complained one user. “This is why competition is good,” added another.

Did any of our readers get the discount offer?
