Ghost of Tsushima PC announcement reportedly coming soon

Rumor has it that Sony Interactive Entertainment is gearing up to announce Ghost of Tsushima for PC. The Sucker Punch Productions-developed hit title released in 2020 but has yet to be officially confirmed for PC unlike Sony’s other first-party single-player hits. And if rumors are to be believed, we’ll hear something as soon as tomorrow, March 5.

When is Ghost of Tsushima expected to release on PC?

Rumor of an announcement of some sort comes from Nick “Shpeshal_Nick” Baker. As of late, Baker has been spot on with his leaks so we wouldn’t be surprised if this one’s accurate as well. Ghost of Tsushima was expected to release on PC at some point, so it’s merely a question of when Sony will announce it.

Back in February, Sony Group executive and interim Sony Interactive Entertainment boss Hiroki Totoki said that he wants PlayStation to “aggressively” pursue a multiplatform release strategy for first-party games, and stressed that he means PC ports.

“In the past, we wanted to popularize consoles and a first-party title’s main purpose was to make the console popular,” he said of Sony’s changing approach to first-party games. “This is true but there’s a synergy to it, so if you have strong first-party content – not only on our console but also other platforms, like computers – first-party can be grown.”

Ghost of Tsushima Influenced Assassin's Creed Mirage

Assassin’s Creed: Mirage launched on October 5th and takes players to medieval Baghdad at the height of the Islamic Golden Age. One of its more immersive new features is the option to play through the game with subtitled Classical Arabic voice work. Ghost of Tsushima‘s Japanese language option played a major role in inspiring Ubisoft’s decision.

Ghost of Tsushima Influenced Assassin’s Creed’s Arabic language option

Games Industry.biz recently spoke to Mirage’s art director Jean-Luc Sala and cultural consultant Mohammed Alemam.

A bit part of the interview was the pair’s explanation of the game’s localization priorities. Usually, Ubisoft’s primary objective is just to make sure players understand what the characters are saying. The first two Assassin’s Creed games actually reference this, directly stating that the Animus automatically translates spoken words.

However, the developers of Assassin’s Creed: Mirage thought it would be more authentic to include an Arabic option as standard. Sucker Punch Productions’ Ghost of Tsushima played a big role in influencing Ubisft’s decision. The samurai game allowed players to go through the game with Japanese voice acting and English subtitles. This created a more authentic experience, and was an element that Ubisoft wanted to emulate.

“We [paid] special attention [to the fact] that people love to play Ghost of Tsushima in Japanese, for example,” said Sala.

The version of Arabic spoken in Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed: Mirage is the Classical Arabic spoken in the 800s. However, while modern Arabic has drifted somewhat, many people in the Arabic world still use and understand the medieval version. “Honestly,” said Sala, “it would have been a shame to miss that opportunity to return to the Middle East with Assassin’s Creed and not [include] a language that is still here.”

Ghost of Tsushima, God of War Lead PS Plus Extra & Premium Stats

Sony has been celebrating the first anniversary of PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium in few different ways, like through avatar giveaways, special PlayStation Stars collectibles, and contests. And in doing so, it has revealed some statistics that show how much subscribers loved God of War and Ghost of Tsushima.

PS Plus stats reveal the top games and franchises for the top two tiers

Sony revealed these stats on its website for a contest that rewards the winner with a PlayStation 5 and PlayStation VR2. The stats are broken up by general numbers and then separated by tier (the results also only reflect June 2022 to April 2023). July 2022, the month after the services launched, was the month with the most hours played, while Sunday was the most popular day to play. Players in Japan also logged the most hours per person and subscribers across the service played an average of 7.4 games.

The Extra stats show that Ghost of Tsushima was not only the third most-played game behind Stray and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, but also the “top game for trophy hunters.” It’s unclear exactly what that entails and if it’s related to the general number of trophies earned or percentages for each player. Regardless, with 77 total trophies and a fairly straightforward Platinum trophy, trophy hunters apparently had quite a lot to do in Ghost of Tsushima. This also corroborates what Nick Maguire, vice president and global head of subscriptions at Sony, said recently about Ghost of Tsushima having the most hours played out of all the games on PlayStation Plus.

The Premiums stats are a little different. Sony didn’t reveal what the top three games were, but stated that God of War, Resident Evil, and The Last of Us were the top three franchises. There are many God of War and Resident Evil titles on Premium, but only The Last of Us and its Left Behind DLC are on Premium.

God of War III Remastered was also the top game for trophy hunters. This is quite peculiar since, unlike Ghost of Tsushima, God of War III’s Platinum requires a least two playthroughs, has a few missable collectibles, and asks players to perform a 1,000-hit combo.

The Ghost of Tsushima Movie Will Be the 'Most Anti-Samurai Samurai' Film

Ghost of Tsushima comments on the ethics of being a samurai, and that’s not lost on Chad Stahelski, the director of the upcoming film adaptation. He spoke more about the Ghost of Tsushima movie and said it would be the “most anti-samurai samurai movie out there.”

The Ghost of Tsushima movie

Stahelski talked about the movie to ComicBookMovie. He said that the team is “in heavy development” on the film and then expressed how they are trying to accurately portray the game in another medium.

“The game story of Jin Sakai, and it being what I would say is ‘the most anti-samurai samurai movie out there’ because of the storylines, themes in it,” said Stahelski. “The journey that Jin Sakai goes through from his transition or his choices of who to become and what the people need him to become and what he [is bound to by honor] is so interesting to me. The story and the characters in the story are definitely something I don’t want to lose in any way.”

Stahelski said something similar in March, but this newer quote is a little more direct, extreme, and detailed.

Stahelski also once again brought up the visual presentation of Sucker Punch Production’s title and how the team is trying to figure out how to pack the game’s signature traits into the Ghost of Tsushima movie.

“I want to keep the visuals,” Stahelski continued. “It’s just how do I pack that much information into a feature that can go onto other features or a TV project? The trick is not, ‘Do we have great material?’ We know we have great material. It’s how to make it palpable on any platform and how do we make a great two or two-and-a-half hour movie out of this and make it satisfying and leave it open to expand on further from there? How to take so much great stuff and get it down to a watchable level is the real challenge.”

10 PlayStation Showcase Announcements We'd Like to See

After many rumors, Sony has finally confirmed the next PlayStation Showcase. The company’s future is mostly shrouded in mystery, too, so there’s plenty of room for all sorts of reveals. And while they probably won’t include Knack 3 or another Ape Escape, here are 10 other PlayStation Showcase announcements that are more likely to show up instead.

10 PlayStation Showcase Announcements We'd Like to See

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

While Square Enix is prepping the launch for one Final Fantasy game, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is still looming on the horizon. The company hasn’t shown much of the highly anticipated follow-up since its reveal in June 2022, leaving fans desperate to see what will happen next in this remade trilogy. It’s still slated for winter 2023 for PlayStation 5, so Square has to start showing more of it sometime in the near future, and a PlayStation Showcase would definitely be a fitting place for it.

10 PlayStation Showcase Announcements We'd Like to See

The Last of Us multiplayer game

Naughty Dog has been talking about this multiplayer The Last of Us game for years, and it has to start showing it at some point. Neil Druckmann revealed concept art of it at the last Summer Game Fest Live, so it makes sense that the team would have at least a trailer one full year later; Druckmann even said the studio would reveal more in 2023. The franchise is also coming up on its tenth anniversary and still riding off the success of the HBO series, so there are multiple reasons why this long-anticipated multiplayer game is likely to be one of the stars of the PlayStation Showcase.

sony showcase

Death Stranding 2

Hideo Kojima has to pick if he’s better friends with Sony or Geoff Keighley, as it wouldn’t be unheard of to see another Death Stranding 2 trailer at the PlayStation Showcase or Summer Game Fest. But seeing as though the PlayStation Showcase is a bit earlier than Keighley’s show and how Sony is, well, paying for Death Stranding, there’s probably a better chance more Death Stranding 2 footage appears at Sony’s event. Death Stranding 2 is also just a working title, so Kojima Productions also has an opportunity to reveal the final name, as well.

10 PlayStation Showcase Announcements We'd Like to See

Metal Gear Solid 3 remake

It seems inevitable that the Metal Gear Solid 3 remake will sneakily tiptoe its way into the PlayStation Showcase. The title hasn’t even been officially announced, but reliable insiders have noted that this modern update of the classic stealth game will make its first grand appearance with Sony. PlayStation has been associated with Metal Gear Solid since the seminal 1998 entry, so such a debut would make sense. The Silent Hill 2 remake is also a PS5 console exclusive for the time being, showing that there’s an official precedent for such a partnership.

10 PlayStation Showcase Announcements We'd Like to See

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2

While anything can happen, it’s almost a given that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will be at the PlayStation Showcase. It’s undoubtedly going to be Sony’s biggest holiday title and that sort of prestige is made for shows like this. Unsubstantiated rumors have filled the air in the absence of official information, so it would also be a fitting time to dispel those whisperings with official details and a lengthy trailer. Tony Todd’s unhinged ramblings can’t be the only Spider-Man 2 information that comes in the first half of the year.

playstation game announcements

An Astro Bot game

It was strange that Sony didn’t have an Astro Bot game ready for PlayStation VR2’s launch after Astro Bot Rescue Mission’s near-universal adulation. Another entry wouldn’t be out of the question, as PS VR2 could use another hit and Astro Bot is a rising star in the PlayStation ecosystem. PS VR2 probably won’t take up a huge portion of the show, but if it’s going to have one slot, Astro Bot deserves it.

10 PlayStation Showcase Announcements We'd Like to See

Neil Druckmann’s game

As he hinted at at Summer Game Fest in 2022, Neil Druckmann has been working on something that’s not the multiplayer The Last of Us game, but it’s unclear what. And while it would seem absurd for two games from the same studio to show up at a PlayStation Showcase, Insomniac came through in the 2021 showcase with Wolverine and Spider-Man 2. Druckmann has been open about Sony’s willingness to give Naughty Dog a healthy amount of freedom, so it’s not a given that it will be The Last of Us Part III.

10 PlayStation Showcase Announcements We'd Like to See

Resident Evil 4’s Ada Wong DLC

Sony has made a habit of having Resident Evil at its shows, and while it’s assuredly too early for another full remake or a numbered sequel, it’s probably just the right time to reveal more about the heavily rumored Ada Wong DLC for the Resident Evil 4 remake. DLC doesn’t often stand out when put up against a lineup of upcoming titles, but Resident Evil 4 is not a typical game and that remake is still floating around the game space. It’s also possible that its VR content will make an appearance, but that seems less likely since Capcom only just started development on it.

10 PlayStation Showcase Announcements We'd Like to See

Bluepoint Games’ project

Bluepoint Games has been developing something in secret, and it’s surprisingly not a remake. While its penchant for remasters and remakes has narrowed the playing field in the past, it’s a lot more wide open here. Tracing over classics has undoubtedly taught the studio the basics of timeless design, so its first new title is quite alluring. However, if it’s somehow just a Bloodborne port, that’s still just fine and would be one of the best PlayStation Showcase announcements.

playstation direct

The Horizon Zero Dawn remake

It is quite soon to be remaking a game from 2017, but the advancements seen in Horizon Forbidden West and the overall impressive quality of The Last of Us Part I (on PS5, at least) make the rumored Horizon Zero Dawn remake more enticing. Bringing in the sequel’s livelier animation and more responsive combat can’t be understated and seeing Horizon untethered from the PS4 would be a sight to behold, something only teased by the recent Burning Shores DLC.

And while the multiplayer game is theoretically more exciting, it’s also probably further off, so don’t expect that as one of the PlayStation Showcase announcements.

Ghost of Tsushima 2 Reportedly Won't Be at PlayStation Showcase

There has been some speculation that Ghost of Tsushima 2 will appear at the upcoming PlayStation Showcase, as it is another big likely sequel in Sony’s lineup. However, according to a reputable insider, the Sucker Punch Productions-developed sequel isn’t slated to be at the show.

Ghost of Tsushima 2 “probably won’t” be at the PlayStation Showcase

As spotted by Push Square, insider Jeff Grubb stated as much on his recent Game Mess stream. Grubb, who accurately reported on the week the showcase would debut during, said that it “[doesn’t] sound like” Ghost of Tsushima 2 would be at the showcase before saying it “probably won’t be there.” He also chimed in noting that the next Dragon Age will not be at the PlayStation Showcase, either. It appeared as though a source was listening and fed him information during the broadcast, as the two hosts speculated earlier that the this sequel would be at the show.

Ghost of Tsushima 2 hasn’t been officially announced, but job listings have pointed to Sucker Punch developing a follow-up to its critically acclaimed open-world game. The posts have called for applicants to have “played Ghost of Tsushima and understand its core combat systems” in addition to being willing to write stories about Feudal Japan.

The first game was revealed somewhat early, as it was announced at E3 2018 and didn’t come out until just over two years later, which is quite a lead time. It has also already been almost three years since the original game launched, so many were probably expecting an announcement soon.

ghost of tsushima 2

Pitting Ghost of Tsushima PS4 vs. PS5 isn’t as easy as it is with many games. It already runs well and looks great on PS4, so the upgrade isn’t as apparent. The fact that it’s a paid upgrade and there are different payment tiers might have you wondering if you’re better off sticking with the PS4 version. We’ll give you the Ghost of Tsushima PS5 upgrade options and our opinion of their worth below.

Is it worth it to upgrade Ghost of Tsushima from PS4 to PS5?

Before we can look at whether the Ghost of Tsushima PS5 upgrade is worth it, we need to look at the pricing tiers:

  • Ghost of Tsushima PS4 Director’s Cut to Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut on PS5: $10
  • Ghost of Tsushima PS4 base game to Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut PS4: $20
  • Ghost of Tsushima PS4 base game to Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut on PS5: $30

Regardless of the tier you go with, we think the upgrade is worth it, especially if you got the base game at a discount. The game loads faster on PS5, looks better, and has a better framerate rate. In addition, it’s the most enjoyable way to experience Jin’s adventure for now. Hopefully, the rumors of a PC release are true, and even more players can enjoy the game in the future.

More PlayStation players have confirmed they chose to buy a PS5 because of the availability of Call of Duty than they did for any of Sony’s console exclusives. The data comes from the latest report from the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) on Microsoft’s proposed acquisition of Activision and how this could impact Sony in the future.

Call of Duty was the most popular choice when buying a PS5

A massive 89% of surveyed PS5 players stated they chose the console because of the availability of one or more games. Among those players who gave that answer, 73% said they chose the PS5 because of Call of Duty. A slightly smaller 69% bought a PS5 console for exclusive games like God of War (41%), The Last of Us (39%), Marvel’s Spider-Man (37%), and Ghost of Tsushima (25.5%). Other popular choices included Grand Theft Auto, Assassin’s Creed, Fortnite, and Star Wars, but Call of Duty was by far the most popular franchise.

The CMA did state that their survey could overstate the importance of Call of Duty when purchasing a console due to its target demographic, but it is still a sticking point for Sony despite a 10-year deal to keep the franchise on PlayStation consoles. There are now suggestions Call of Duty could be removed from the Microsoft and Activision acquisition deal because of the ongoing arguments.

Ghost of Tsushima 2 Teased

A new PS5 ad may have teased Ghost of Tsushima 2. The new “Live from PS5” TV spot is meant to tease upcoming games, PS5 accessories, and features, and the first video showcased plenty of current and upcoming games, some of which are seemingly a mystery.

Why players think Live from PS5 is teasing Ghost of Tsushima 2

At the 43-second mark in the video, a group of armored horsemen are seen riding away from a burning village. The armor is certainly representative of that seen in Ghost of Tsushima, and we do get a glimpse of a character amongst a field of spider lilies later on in the video. While there is a chance the video could have teased Ghost of Tsushima 2, it is also possible it is a reference to Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut that was released on PS5 in 2021. While Sucker Punch is yet to confirm they are making a new game in the franchise, hints and rumors have been whirling around since 2020.

The video also shows hints of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Horizon Forbidden West, God of War Ragnarok, Final Fantasy 16, Ratchet & Clank, Returnal, Gran Turismo 7, and Stray. There’s a second mystery game, too, that players believe may well be a hint at Uncharted 5.

PlayStation Exclusives Better Than Xbox

Microsoft has admitted that Sony’s PlayStation exclusives like God of War and Spider-Man are better than its Xbox exclusives. In a response to the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) Issues Statement, the company acknowledged Sony had more PS5 and PS4 exclusive games than they had on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, and that they’re both more successful and achieve better reviews.

Microsoft feels PlayStation exclusives are better quality than Xbox games

Sony has more exclusive games for PS5 and PS4 than Microsoft has for Xbox, “many of which are better quality,” Microsoft put in their response to the CMA. In fact, both Sony and Nintendo’s games “rank among the best-selling in Europe and worldwide”. As well as God of War and Marvel’s Spider-Man, Microsoft also named The Last of Us and Ghost of Tsushima as those better than its own exclusive games.

Microsoft claims that Sony’s PlayStation-exclusive titles account for 10-20% of their rival’s global game sales in 2021. In contrast, Microsoft’s Xbox-exclusive games accounted for just 0-10% of their global game sales. Sony’s review scores are better too, with an average of 87/100 on Metacritic for their exclusive games compared to 80/100 for Microsoft.

It is for reasons like this that Microsoft contests the argument that Sony would no longer be able to compete with Microsoft if they acquired Activision. On the other hand, Sony claims that Microsoft will withhold Call of Duty from services like PS Plus, and this will seriously impact how effectively PS Plus can compete with Xbox Game Pass. The in-depth investigation into the deal in Europe continues.
