Ghost of Tsushima PC announcement reportedly coming soon

Rumor has it that Sony Interactive Entertainment is gearing up to announce Ghost of Tsushima for PC. The Sucker Punch Productions-developed hit title released in 2020 but has yet to be officially confirmed for PC unlike Sony’s other first-party single-player hits. And if rumors are to be believed, we’ll hear something as soon as tomorrow, March 5.

When is Ghost of Tsushima expected to release on PC?

Rumor of an announcement of some sort comes from Nick “Shpeshal_Nick” Baker. As of late, Baker has been spot on with his leaks so we wouldn’t be surprised if this one’s accurate as well. Ghost of Tsushima was expected to release on PC at some point, so it’s merely a question of when Sony will announce it.

Back in February, Sony Group executive and interim Sony Interactive Entertainment boss Hiroki Totoki said that he wants PlayStation to “aggressively” pursue a multiplatform release strategy for first-party games, and stressed that he means PC ports.

“In the past, we wanted to popularize consoles and a first-party title’s main purpose was to make the console popular,” he said of Sony’s changing approach to first-party games. “This is true but there’s a synergy to it, so if you have strong first-party content – not only on our console but also other platforms, like computers – first-party can be grown.”

Ghost of Tsushima Influenced Assassin's Creed Mirage

Assassin’s Creed: Mirage launched on October 5th and takes players to medieval Baghdad at the height of the Islamic Golden Age. One of its more immersive new features is the option to play through the game with subtitled Classical Arabic voice work. Ghost of Tsushima‘s Japanese language option played a major role in inspiring Ubisoft’s decision.

Ghost of Tsushima Influenced Assassin’s Creed’s Arabic language option

Games Industry.biz recently spoke to Mirage’s art director Jean-Luc Sala and cultural consultant Mohammed Alemam.

A bit part of the interview was the pair’s explanation of the game’s localization priorities. Usually, Ubisoft’s primary objective is just to make sure players understand what the characters are saying. The first two Assassin’s Creed games actually reference this, directly stating that the Animus automatically translates spoken words.

However, the developers of Assassin’s Creed: Mirage thought it would be more authentic to include an Arabic option as standard. Sucker Punch Productions’ Ghost of Tsushima played a big role in influencing Ubisft’s decision. The samurai game allowed players to go through the game with Japanese voice acting and English subtitles. This created a more authentic experience, and was an element that Ubisoft wanted to emulate.

“We [paid] special attention [to the fact] that people love to play Ghost of Tsushima in Japanese, for example,” said Sala.

The version of Arabic spoken in Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed: Mirage is the Classical Arabic spoken in the 800s. However, while modern Arabic has drifted somewhat, many people in the Arabic world still use and understand the medieval version. “Honestly,” said Sala, “it would have been a shame to miss that opportunity to return to the Middle East with Assassin’s Creed and not [include] a language that is still here.”

Veteran BioWare developer Jos Hendriks has announced that he has joined Sony’s Sucker Punch Productions. Hendriks spent over 14 years at BioWare, where he primarily worked on Mass Effect games. He was laid off by the troubled studio earlier this year.

What’s Sony’s Sucker Punch working on?

During his lengthy career at BioWare, Hendriks worked on Mass Effect 2, 3, and Andromeda, as well as Dragon Age: Inquisition and Anthem. Prior to BioWare’s layoffs, he was working on Dragon Age: Dreadwolf.

Hendriks says his journey into video game development began with paper level designs for Super Mario World, followed by modding levels for Unreal Tournament 99 and Timesplitters 2.

As for what he’s working on at Sucker Punch and in what capacity, Hendriks hasn’t disclosed anything yet. Thanks to numerous job descriptions and teases, it has been speculated that the team is working on another Ghost of Tsushima game alongside some mystery projects. Sucker Punch hasn’t confirmed anything yet but has denied rumors that it’s working on new Infamous and Sly Cooper games.

A follow-up to Ghost of Tsushima makes sense considering the game’s commercial success around the globe. A movie based on the game is also in the works.

The Ghost of Tsushima Movie Will Be the 'Most Anti-Samurai Samurai' Film

Ghost of Tsushima comments on the ethics of being a samurai, and that’s not lost on Chad Stahelski, the director of the upcoming film adaptation. He spoke more about the Ghost of Tsushima movie and said it would be the “most anti-samurai samurai movie out there.”

The Ghost of Tsushima movie

Stahelski talked about the movie to ComicBookMovie. He said that the team is “in heavy development” on the film and then expressed how they are trying to accurately portray the game in another medium.

“The game story of Jin Sakai, and it being what I would say is ‘the most anti-samurai samurai movie out there’ because of the storylines, themes in it,” said Stahelski. “The journey that Jin Sakai goes through from his transition or his choices of who to become and what the people need him to become and what he [is bound to by honor] is so interesting to me. The story and the characters in the story are definitely something I don’t want to lose in any way.”

Stahelski said something similar in March, but this newer quote is a little more direct, extreme, and detailed.

Stahelski also once again brought up the visual presentation of Sucker Punch Production’s title and how the team is trying to figure out how to pack the game’s signature traits into the Ghost of Tsushima movie.

“I want to keep the visuals,” Stahelski continued. “It’s just how do I pack that much information into a feature that can go onto other features or a TV project? The trick is not, ‘Do we have great material?’ We know we have great material. It’s how to make it palpable on any platform and how do we make a great two or two-and-a-half hour movie out of this and make it satisfying and leave it open to expand on further from there? How to take so much great stuff and get it down to a watchable level is the real challenge.”

Ghost of Tsushima 2 Reportedly Won't Be at PlayStation Showcase

There has been some speculation that Ghost of Tsushima 2 will appear at the upcoming PlayStation Showcase, as it is another big likely sequel in Sony’s lineup. However, according to a reputable insider, the Sucker Punch Productions-developed sequel isn’t slated to be at the show.

Ghost of Tsushima 2 “probably won’t” be at the PlayStation Showcase

As spotted by Push Square, insider Jeff Grubb stated as much on his recent Game Mess stream. Grubb, who accurately reported on the week the showcase would debut during, said that it “[doesn’t] sound like” Ghost of Tsushima 2 would be at the showcase before saying it “probably won’t be there.” He also chimed in noting that the next Dragon Age will not be at the PlayStation Showcase, either. It appeared as though a source was listening and fed him information during the broadcast, as the two hosts speculated earlier that the this sequel would be at the show.

Ghost of Tsushima 2 hasn’t been officially announced, but job listings have pointed to Sucker Punch developing a follow-up to its critically acclaimed open-world game. The posts have called for applicants to have “played Ghost of Tsushima and understand its core combat systems” in addition to being willing to write stories about Feudal Japan.

The first game was revealed somewhat early, as it was announced at E3 2018 and didn’t come out until just over two years later, which is quite a lead time. It has also already been almost three years since the original game launched, so many were probably expecting an announcement soon.

Ghost of Tsushima 2 Teased

A new PS5 ad may have teased Ghost of Tsushima 2. The new “Live from PS5” TV spot is meant to tease upcoming games, PS5 accessories, and features, and the first video showcased plenty of current and upcoming games, some of which are seemingly a mystery.

Why players think Live from PS5 is teasing Ghost of Tsushima 2

At the 43-second mark in the video, a group of armored horsemen are seen riding away from a burning village. The armor is certainly representative of that seen in Ghost of Tsushima, and we do get a glimpse of a character amongst a field of spider lilies later on in the video. While there is a chance the video could have teased Ghost of Tsushima 2, it is also possible it is a reference to Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut that was released on PS5 in 2021. While Sucker Punch is yet to confirm they are making a new game in the franchise, hints and rumors have been whirling around since 2020.

The video also shows hints of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Horizon Forbidden West, God of War Ragnarok, Final Fantasy 16, Ratchet & Clank, Returnal, Gran Turismo 7, and Stray. There’s a second mystery game, too, that players believe may well be a hint at Uncharted 5.

Warrior and Bullet Train actor Andrew Koji has revealed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that he’s going after the role of protagonist Jin Sakai in the upcoming Ghost of Tsushima movie. Sony has yet to announce the movie’s cast but Daisuke Tsuji, who brought the character to life in Sucker Punch Productions’ hit video game, has already expressed an interest in the role previously.

Like Tsuji and writer Takashi Doscher, Koji says he’s a fan of the game. Such is his love for Ghost of Tsushima that he’s finished it twice now, according to Entertainment Weekly. The Japanese-English actor is currently in South Africa filming Warrior’s third season.

I’m going after Ghost of Tsushima — that’s what I’m going to do. I would love that. I think I can do a really good Jin Sakai. I can bring my own spin to it. I’ve played [the video game] twice now. I was thinking about it because [the adaptation has] been on the horizon, all the team talking about it. It would have to stand by itself, because the game’s so good. Let that exist by itself, and the film should be something slightly different. That’s the problem with those video game films.

Koji is going to find some competition from Japanese-American actor Tsuji, who has not only offered his talent to PlayStation Productions, he has also agreed to doing “butt nudity.” For those who haven’t played Ghost of Tsushima, Tsuji is referring to hot springs scenes in the game.

Ultimately, Sony gets to decide who plays Jin. We’ll update our readers when an announcement is made.

In other news, Sony has expanded its anime empire as leading anime store Right Stuf has joined Crunchyroll, and MultiVersus Season 1 has been delayed along with Morty.

Infamous Second Son

Sucker Punch has announced that a piece of Infamous Second Son DLC is now free, specifically the Cole’s Legacy add-on that was previously only available by pre-ordering the game. Revealed through a tweet on the developer’s official account, Cole’s Legacy has been added to the PlayStation Store and will come at no cost for most regions, including the US. Infamous Second Son was released on PS4 on March 21, 2014.

A new trend in releasing past pre-order DLC for free

Back in 2013, Sucker Punch made it a point to announce that the Cole’s Legacy DLC would be exclusive to various special editions and pre-orders of Infamous Second Son. Cristian Cardona, the then Associate Product Marketing Manager of Software Marketing, stated in an official PlayStation blog that the add-on will be “only available via these deals” and they “won’t be selling it via the Store.”

So either inFamous Second Son has been out long enough that Sucker Punch thought it might as well make the DLC free or whatever exclusivity deal is no longer in effect. At any rate, this is a good chance to get Cole’s Legacy while it’s available, though the game is about eight years old at this point.

The add-on features a series of missions as Delsin Rowe and takes place between Infamous 2 and Infamous Second Son. It explains the overreaction by the Department of Unified Protection in taking over Seattle after Cole MacGrath’s adventure in New Marais. Completing the DLC will unlock a Cole MacGrath jacket as a cosmetic for Delsin.

This announcement comes after Supermassive Games revealed earlier this month that the Curator’s Cut for The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan would be available for free. The Curator’s Cut was also only available as a pre-order bonus for the game. Perhaps we will see more exclusive pre-order DLC be released for free in the future.

In other news, Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness will apparently be added to the PS Plus Premium classics catalog, and The Last of Us Part 1 remake will reportedly support VRR based on leaked footage.

Ghost of Tsushima sales have reached a whopping 9.73 million copies sold on the PS5 and PS4, Sucker Punch Productions has announced. The studio is celebrating its hit game’s two-year anniversary this weekend, and released some interesting player statistics on Twitter, including number of in-game photos taken, number of foxes pet, and more.

Ghost of Tsushima sales are a testament to its quality

Ghost of Tsushima’s PS4 release earned a metascore of 83/100 based on 122 critic reviews but it received universal acclaim from players around the globe. Both critics and users unanimously agreed that the game’s quality set the bar high for new first-party IPs. Sucker Punch Productions continued to make improvements to the game, releasing an even better quality of product with Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut, which earned a metascore of 87/100 on the PS5 based on 73 critic reviews. It’s no surprise, then, that we’ve seen hints of a sequel in multiple job descriptions published by the studio.

Other interesting stats revealed include:

  • 78 million photos taken
  • 75.18 million foxes pet
  • 91.4 million Legends mode missions played
  • 998.5 million standoffs
  • 540.8 million duels
  • 94.76 million onsen visited
  • Players spent 6437.4 years on horseback

As for what’s next, Sucker Punch Productions is keeping tight-lipped but we expect the announcement of a sequel in due course. In the meantime, a Ghost of Tsushima movie adaption is in the works.

In other news, God of War Ragnarok’s Jotnar Edition sold out within minutes of going live for pre-orders, and Sony’s acquisition of Bungie is now complete.

New Sly Cooper and Infamous Games

In what will be a sucker punch blow for fans of Sly Cooper and/or Infamous, developer Sucker Punch Productions has confirmed that there are no plans to revisit either franchise. No other studio will be working on those games, either, so fans can forget about any spin-offs or remakes handled by a different developer.

No new Sly Cooper and Infamous games

In a blog post on its official website, Sucker Punch provided an update on its “legacy franchises,” saying how its current project requires “the full attention of [the] studio.” This means that the dev has “no plans to revisit Infamous or Sly Cooper right now.”

The blog post also mentioned how “no other studio is currently working on projects related to those franchises either.” This puts a nail in the coffin of the rumors of both Sly Cooper and Infamous games being in the works.

Sucker Punch hasn’t totally shot down the idea of these franchises being revisited in the future, however, saying how the characters in Sly Cooper and Infamous are “very special and near and dear to [its heart], so while [they’d] never say never to re-opening the doors down the road, for now there are no Infamous or Sly Cooper games in development.”

The developer concluded its blog post by stating that Infamous 2 UGC servers would soon be moved to a new home, so that they can be kept up and running for “a bit longer.” The team is also aiming to put the Cole’s Legacy DLC for Infamous Second Son on the PS Store for all regions, as this was previously only available as part of the Collector’s Edition.

As for the new Sucker Punch game that is in development, eager fans got no hints at all in this blog post, with the developer signing off with: “We’re not ready to talk about whatever might be next, but we hope you’ll keep following us whenever we’re ready to share more.”

In other PlayStation news, Final Fantasy 14 North American servers are experiencing DDoS attacks. EA has posted a silly tweet about single-player games and is suffering the consequences. Cory Barlog is begging for human decency and respect after God of War fans’ inappropriate behavior.
