Tekken 8 is the new release to make the biggest impact in the January 2024 PlayStation Store downloads chart. While it’s not the only new January game to enter the chart for PS5, it’s the only title to break into the top 5, beating The Last of Us Part II Remastered by a significant margin. Meanwhile, not a single new game hit the PS4 charts.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III took the top spot in the PS5 downloads chart in North America, although it only reached third place in Europe. Perpetual best-seller Grand Theft Auto V remains in the top spot in Europe and came second in North America. Tekken 8 is the best-selling new release, coming in at #4 in North America and #5 in Europe.

Other new releases to enter the PS5 sales chart include The Last of Us Part II Remastered at #11 in North America and #10 in Europe, and Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown at #19 in North America and #13 in Europe. Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth broke into the North America chart at #14 but missed the Europe chart. Finally, Granblue Fantasy: Relink hit the North America chart at #18 but also missed the Europe chart, something that’s quite an achievement for a game that was only in early access until February 1.

Rockstar Games has announced that its Rockstar Editor in GTA 5 is shutting down for the PS4 and Xbox One versions of the game. The developer said that this move was “necessary” to continue supporting GTA 5 on last-gen platforms.

GTA 5 Rockstar Editor shutting down on PS4 and Xbox One on February 20, 2024

The GTA 5 Rockstar Editor on last-gen consoles will cease to exist on February 20. After this, all of players’ clips and projects will be removed. Those who own GTA 5 on the PS5 will be able to export all their projects should they wish to preserve them by following the steps below, as outlined by Rockstar Games:

1. Open the Rockstar Editor
2. Select Video Gallery
3. Select the Project you want to Export
4. Select Upload to YouTube, then yes
   1. If no YouTube account has been linked to your Rockstar Games account, then select Yes to continue to link your accounts
   2. Follow instructions to link your YouTube account to your Rockstar Games account
   3. Return to game after linking the accounts
5. If you agree to the Sharing Policy, select Upload
6. Confirm your video title, then the video description, tagging, etc.

All exported projects will automatically be uploaded to YouTube. Players should connect their Rockstar Games account to the YouTube account they wish to upload their projects to.

According to a new report, GTA 5 single-player story DLC‘s cancellation was the unfortunate byproduct of intense disagreements between higher-ups at Rockstar Games. Rockstar has previously confirmed that GTA 5 DLC was planned and ultimately scrapped, but it has long been assumed that GTA Online‘s success was the prime reason for the cancellation. While that’s true, there seems to be more to the story than that.

Why was GTA 5’s single-player DLC canceled?

Recently leaked internal documents have confirmed that Rockstar had plans for several GTA 5 DLCs and expansions, none of which panned out. According to YouTuber Mors Mutual Insurance, who has examined the matter in great detail, it was creative differences between Rockstar founders — the Houser brothers — and long-time GTA lead Leslie Benzies that resulted in the DLC’s cancellation.

The Houser brothers were reportedly in favor of single-player projects, whereas Benzies had an inclination towards live service. The disagreement resulted in Benzies famously going on a lengthy sabbatical and eventually leaving Rockstar before suing the company — a matter that was settled out of court. According to the report, Benzies’ departure spurred a large number of resignations, with Rockstar struggling to remain focused on its single-player endeavors.

Following this debacle, Rockstar pivoted to Red Dead Redemption 2 while continuing to support GTA Online. Other single-player projects like Bully 2 and a new Midnight Club were also shelved in the process.

Hackers have leaked GTA 5 source code and a plethora of content from GTA 6 and Bully 2. It’s unclear if the content dump comes from the infamous Rockstar Games hack, but it has been suggested that one of the individuals who leaked the hacked material is known to the developer, who has sued them multiple times in the past.

The content dump, the entirety of which can be found on Reddit, comes less than a week after one of the teens behind the GTA 6 hack was sentenced to an indefinite hospital order after they continued to commit cyber crimes on bail, and expressed their desire to continue down that path if released.

Leaked content includes GTA 5’s canceled single-player DLC, a GTA 6 PC script as well as miscellaneous game content like lock-picking mechanic, Bully 2 concept and ideas, and even some content purportedly from canceled PS3 exclusive, Agent.

It’s unclear when Rockstar Games will respond considering we’re in a holiday period. Hackers have targeted several companies in recent weeks alone, including Insomniac Games and Ubisoft. The former suffered a devastating hack whereas the latter managed to thwart the hacking attempt.

Sony has revealed the full list of PS Plus Extra and Premium games for December 2023. Headlining PlayStation Plus Extra are games like Grand Theft Auto V and Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin, which managed to leak earlier today. Meanwhile, PlayStation Plus Premium gets Mega Man and Thrillville.

Halloween is almost here, and with it comes some new content for GTA Online. Developer Rockstar has detailed what to expect from various GTA Online Halloween events.

One of the main events going on this year is the “Ghosts Exposed” event, an event that tasks players with traveling around the city and snapping pictures of ghosts who will appear at different locations. After collecting all 10 images, players will be given the “Ghosts Exposed” livery for the new Albany Brigham car in the game, making it look very close to the iconic Ectomobile from the Ghostbusters franchise.

Besides hunting for ghosts, players can also take part in some extraterrastrial activities. Halloween Freemode events for GTA Online include Business Battles that will ask players to steal spaceship parts from places like Fort Zancudo.

Alongside the new two events, new cosmetic items will also be included in the Halloween update, including a free witch mask and two masks that require players to complete Bunker missions in order to unlock. Finally, new Halloween props are available in the GTA Online Job Creator, allowing fans to create missions that have spooky themes to help celebrate the season.

The GTA 5 PS5 update 1.64 releases today, December 13, and the patch notes have revealed numerous features exclusive to PS5 and Xbox Series X versions of the game. This includes the addition of HSW races and ray-traced reflections for the game’s Fidelity Mode, which emphasizes graphical fidelity over a high frame rate. These added reflections should make water look even better than they already do in Grand Theft Auto 5 and GTA Online for PlayStation 5.

GTA 5 PS5 update 1.64 brings HSW Races and GTA+ improvements

Here is a quick breakdown of features and additions that the update brings specifically on PS5 (and Xbox Series X):

• You can now convert existing races to HSW races that feature Hao’s Special Works vehicles (of course)
• You don’t need to complete Hao’s Intro Race to access HSW upgrade services and mods anymore
• Ray-traced reflections have been added to Fidelity Mode, adding more detail to reflective and glossy surfaces
• Match and Heist bonuses for GTA+ members are on Landing Page titles
• GTA+ members will see how much extra bonus payouts they receive for being a member at the end of doing an activity

Title update 1.64 will add additional story and Freemode missions to the Los Santos Drug Wars, a new Acid Lab upgrade for the MTL Brickade 6×6, and a new Freakshop social space where players can launch First Dose story missions. Eight new vehicles and hundreds of new clothing and accessories are included as well. You can read the full patch notes here.

In November 2022, Take-Two said that the Rockstar Games hack has not impacted the GTA 6 release date. Part of the GTA 5 code was also leaked in the same month and revealed cut content that didn’t make the final game.

Part of the GTA V source code has apparently leaked online before being rapidly removed by a DMCA takedown. The source code included content from two different builds of the game, including some data that never made it into the final version of Grand Theft Auto 5 on any platform.

The leaked source code allegedly included scripting functions, turntables, developer notes, some parts of the anti-cheat, and even some content that never made it into the final version of Grand Theft Auto V according to DSO Gaming. It’s difficult to verify any of this data seeing as the leak has since received a DMCA takedown, although Reddit managed to capture a screenshot of some of the files before their removal.

The GTA V source code was reportedly stolen at the same time as the massive GTA 6 leak back in September. Developer Rockstar’s parent company Take-Two Interactive later confirmed the leak to be real and the hacker was later arrested and charged with computer misuse. It was reported the hacker managed to sell the GTA V source code before his arrest and the buyer then attempted to sell the source code himself. Although none of the GTA V theft details were ever confirmed, the alleged leak does add more fuel to the fire.

Rockstar is reported to have been releasing a game mode called Cops ‘n’ Crooks for GTA Online and GTA V, but due to real-life events including the murder of George Floyd, the mode was quietly delayed indefinitely. The decision is part of efforts from the developer to clear up their own working conditions as well as the reputation of its beloved Grand Theft Auto franchise.

Why Cops ‘n’ Crooks will likely never be released

Cop ‘n’ Crooks was a game mode that was reported to be due for release for GTA Online and GTA V in the summer of 2020 according to Bloomberg. Players would be split into two teams, one of good guys and one of bad guys, although the actual aim of the mode beyond that is unknown. When the murder of George Floyd at the hands of a police officer brought police behavior into the spotlight, the boundary between good guys and bad guys seemed to be blurring. As such, Rockstar decided to indefinitely delay the mode and there are currently no plans for it to be released.

This is just part of Rockstar’s attempts to clean up the public perception of their franchise. The PS5 version of Grand Theft Auto V removed transphobic jokes and offensive LGBTQ+ stereotypes, while GTA 6 is rumored to be getting a female protagonist for the first time in the franchise. The developer also doesn’t want to “‘punch down’ by making jokes about marginalized groups” either. Thoughts are that this will make GTA 6 feel like a different game from its predecessors, but only time will tell if this turns out to be true.

In other news, the latest Gran Turismo 7 update has added three more cars but not much else. Elsewhere, seven more Yakuza games will be making their way to Playstation Plus over the next few months.

It looks like Rockstar Games has quietly removed some controversial content from GTA 5 PS5 and Xbox Series X versions. The content in question includes several transphobic jokes and stereotypes that LGBTQ+ game professionals group OutMakingGames had previously called on Rockstar Games to remove via an open letter. The changes were spotted by Reddit user JayProspero and Twitter user Kirsty Cloud.

Which content has been removed from GTA 5 PS5 version?

It’s unclear the extent to which Rockstar Games has made the aforementioned changes but, so far, players have spotted the removal of a toy in an arcade and some trans caricatures outside Cockatoos.

The models still exist in Director Mode at the moment, but their dialogue options have been removed (presumably this means protagonist dialogue lines to these NPCs about using hormones etc are therefore unused now too).

OutMakingGames had pleaded with the developer to reconsider harmful stereotypes in the updated versions of the game. “Given the cultural impact GTA V has around the world, Rockstar has a social responsibility to your players (many of whom may be LGBTQ+), to your staff and to the world at large to not promote violence against trans and gender diverse people,” the group wrote. Rockstar Games did not respond to the letter but it evidently took the feedback on board.

In other news, Far Cry 3 and Child of Light director Patrick Plourde has left Ubisoft after 19 years, and Massive Entertainment’s Star Wars game might be cross-gen.
