Tango Gameworks founder Shinji Mikami will be leaving the company later this year according to parent company Bethesda. Mikami most recently worked on The Evil Within, Ghostwire: Tokyo, and the Xbox-exclusive Hi-Fi Rush, the latter of which will continue to receive support from the studio beyond his departure.

Mikami’s future plans have not been revealed, although Bethesda did “wish Mikami-san well in the future.” However, it is believed the games industry veteran will take the opportunity to retire on a high note following the success of Hi-Fi Rush. He has hinted during previous interviews that he felt he had aged beyond the peak of game development and that the process became more difficult once people hit their 40s. Mikami is now 57 years old.
An internal email discovered by TrueAchievements states that Bethesda will continue to support Ghostwire: Tokyo and Hi-Fi Rush as well as decide on the studio’s future direction. There had been previous hints at DLC and a sequel for Ghostwire: Tokyo, although it is unclear whether this will now materialize after Mikami’s departure. Tango Gameworks is currently working on bringing the game to Xbox Series X|S and this version is expected to be released next month.
