Publisher Nacon and developer Spiders shared a new trailer for the upcoming action RPG GreedFall 2: The Dying World. The game is on its way to PC, PlayStation, and Xbox Consoles, and Steam users will be able to play in early access.

GreedFall 2 will launch for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC later this year. While the publisher’s yet to reveal a more precise release window, Steam users can play in early access this summer. While Spiders has not shared any gameplay, the new trailer offers story teasers and an intimidating new boss monster.

The GreedFall 2 trailer opens with an attack on a native settlement on Teer Fradee, the North America-inspired island players explored in the first game. The attackers appear to be members of the Coin Guard, a large and powerful mercenary company. The invaders take GreedFall 2’s protagonist and the rest of her village back to the continent of Gacane, presumably for slave labor. However, the hero escapes with a combination of magic and physical prowess. Viewers next see her leading a party of three companions to a battlefield, where they encounter a massive, golem-like monster.

The first game saw players departing from the continental city of Sérène to the newly established colonies on Teer Fradee. However, the new game flips the script, letting players explore Gacane from the perspective of a Teer Fradee native. Confirmed locations include the Bridge Alliance city of Olima, which is presumably the city glimpsed in the trailer. Despite the number, GreedFall 2 is a prequel set 3 years before the original game.

GreedFall 2: The Dying World has been announced by developer Spiders. Despite the game’s name, the RPG’s story is set before the events of GreedFall and features a new protagonist and new tactical combat gameplay. The game will be arriving for consoles and PC but don’t expect to see it anytime soon as its release window is 2024.

What we know about GreedFall 2

GreedFall 2: The Dying World is set three years before the events of GreedFall. This time players will not assume the role of De Sardet, this time playing as a native of Teer Fradee. Colonists capture you and take you to the continent of Gacane, a world already ravaged by war and the Malichor plague. Your aim is to gain your freedom by making friends and choosing between diplomacy, cunning, or combat. At the same time, another man’s ambitions of conquest must be ended if Teer Fradee and its continent are to maintain their independence. The RPG will focus on story and player choice but combat has been altered to take on a more tactical touch.

Spiders’ Founder and Director Jehanne Rousseau explained why the team was heading back into the world of GreedFall:

While we were working on Steelrising, our love of the GreedFall universe never faded, and so we are thrilled to be returning to it. In this new chapter, players will explore the old continent with its bigger and more diverse environments. They will meet new companions and new factions, and I hope they will have unforgettable adventures.

GreedFall 2 will be released on unspecified consoles and PC in 2024.

In other news, Sony has forged a deal with Ubisoft for Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, suggesting PS5 players may be getting exclusive content. Elsewhere, Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown has been canceled for PS4 and the PS5 version has been delayed.

GreedFall: Gold Edition is releasing alongside the new De Vespe Conspiracy expansion pack for PS5 on June 30, 2021. The next-gen updated version of the game will feature enhanced visuals in native 4K, as well as faster loading times and improved performance. The Gold Edition will include the new expansion pack for free, and owners of the base game will also be able to upgrade to the next-gen version for free.

The next-gen PS5 update was previously teased after the game reached over one million copies sold worldwide. Inspired by Baroque art from the 17th century, the game takes players to a mystical land known as Teer Fradee. Various people inhabit the land, such as the native Yecht Fradí, various foreign settlers, and other supernatural beings. The game also boasts some incredibly detailed lore and world-building, including an entire fictional constructed language.

The Gold Edition will provide all of the best experiences of the base game with enhanced graphics and performance utilizing the PS5’s new hardware, as well as the new De Vespe Conspiracy expansion for free. Some notable performance improvements include a 60 fps performance mode that features UHD native 4K resolution, enhanced graphics, and faster loading.

The expansion will bring players to a previously undiscovered region of Teer Fradee and battle strange new beasts. In it, players will “navigate a web of lies, manipulation, and secrets” that will ultimately uncover a conspiracy that “threatens the balance of power”. It will also add a totally new faction as well as new upgrades for players’ gear.

Previously, GreedFall was available for free on PS Plus as part of its January 2021 offering. Today is the last day to redeem the January 2021 PlayStation Plus free games. Starting tomorrow, a new batch of games goes live, and January’s free titles will be available only to those who redeemed them.

The January 2021 free PS Plus games are Maneater (PS5 only), GreedFall, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider (both PS4, but playable on PS5 via backwards compatibility). As a reminder, even if you don’t own a PS5 yet, you can still redeem the PS5-only games from the web PlayStation Store and have them in your library whenever you do get the next-gen console.

Tomorrow, February 2nd, the new February 2021 PlayStation Plus free games go live. These will include the new release PS5-exclusive Destruction AllStars, Control Ultimate Edition for both PS4 and PS5, and Concrete Genie on PS4, playable on PS5 via backwards compatibility. Again, even if you don’t have a PS5, you’ll want to make sure you snag all of the games for your PS Plus collection to build up a library of next-gen titles.

Sony’s latest PlayStation State of Play was a deep dive into Destruction AllStars, finally showing off the myriad modes and a whole bunch of gameplay for the multiplayer title. Originally intended to release closer to the PS5’s launch, it was delayed to allow a bit more time for polish and to give it a release on PlayStation Plus, which will help the multiplayer title get a much larger audience of players right from the beginning. Destruction AllStars will remain free on Plus for two months, through both February and March. It’s unclear if this means we’ll get one less game in March because of it.

Control Ultimate Edition releasing on Plus also seems to solve an issue with previous-gen players who have the standard edition of the game not being able to upgrade to the next-gen version. Now all players will get the full Control experience on the new console as long as they subscribe to PS Plus. The PS Plus release is a day and date release with the digital version coming out, meaning subscribers are technically getting two new releases free with PlayStation Plus in February.

Make sure you grab the January 2021 PS Plus free games before they disappear tomorrow! Store update times can vary, so it’s better not to tempt fate. After all, you’ve had a full month to redeem them already.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider (PS4): Step back into the adventurous shoes of Lara Croft in the third part of the Tomb Raider reboot trilogy as she and Micah unwittingly set off and subsequently try to stop an apocalypse. The gritty and mature reboot trilogy doesn’t pull any punches. Read our review.

(As an additional note, the Shadow of the Tomb Raider Definitive Edition upgrade pack is on sale for $5.99, down from $19.99. This will unlock all of the game’s DLC content for you.)

GreedFall (PS4): GreedFall is an RPG developed by Spiders and published by Focus Home Interactive. It takes clear influences from games like The Elder Scrolls and Dragon Age, while having a unique flair all its own. The developer hoped that its game would fill the void left by BioWare, and now you can try it for yourself to see if they succeeded. Read our review.

Maneater (PS5): The worlds first Shark RPG (ShaRkPG) has you take on the role of a baby Mako Shark, devouring  food, growing, and working your way up the food chain. It’s told as a mock nature documentary, and lets you become the shark with excellent swimming mechanics and a visceral brutality to the shark’s snapping jaws. Unlock a variety of upgrades and mutations to customize your shark and the way you play, and enjoy a few human snacks on the beach before literally sinking boats filled with hunters. (Note that the PS Plus free games only include the PS5 version of Maneater. The PS4 version is not included. If you already own the PS4 version, the PS5 version is a free upgrade anyway outside of the PS Plus Instant Games Collection. The PS5 upgrade includes a number of enhancements and improvements to the last-gen version, as well as a whole new Trophy list to get another platinum on.)

That time of the month has rolled around again and Sony has revealed the three titles heading into the PlayStation Plus Instant Games Collection for January 2021. From Tuesday, January 5, PlayStation 4 players will be able to download Greedfall and Shadow of the Tomb Raider. PS5 players get an extra title in the form of Maneater. All of these titles will be available to redeem until Monday, February 1.

Greedfall is an action-RPG that sends players to the mysterious island of Teer Fradee. Here, the Merchant Congregation is looking for a cure for the plague-like malichor that’s ripping through the continent. Using diplomacy or deception, protagonist De Sardet must choose whether to ally with the native islanders who possess magical powers, or with the foreign nations trying to colonise the land. The game won’t be available for players in the Middle East; they’ll get Assetto Corsa instead. Players in Japan and South Korea will get Mistover.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider is the third and final instalment in the rebooted Tomb Raider trilogy. The game takes place two months after the events of Rise of the Tomb Raider. Lara Croft and her friend Jonah Maiava travel to Mexico where they try to stop the exploits of the Trinity paramilitary organization. In doing so, they manage to trigger a Mayan apocalypse known as the Cleansing, and now the duo has to stop the world from ending instead. This is just the base game rather than the Definitive Edition, so none of the DLC will be included.

PS5 players get to try out Maneater, the world’s first “shaRkPG.” Unsurprisingly, players assume the role of a shark as they terrorize their prey. Beginning as a pup, prey will start out as small fry. As the shark grows bigger, bigger victims are required. There are plenty of enemies to avoid, though, including a fisherman that dismembers the shark. Revenge will be sweet. Only PS5 players can make use of this promotion, however. The PlayStation 4 version is not included. If you have played the game on PS4 previously, be aware that saves, stats, and trophies will not be carried across. The good news for Trophy hunters is that it’s an entirely separate Trophy list for you to get Platinum on.

All of the games will be available to redeem until February 1. With January 5 still six days away, there’s still time to redeem December’s games. Just Cause 4, Rocket Arena, and Worms Rumble, as well as November/December’s PS5 game Bugsnax, all leave the service on January 4. As long as you redeem the games before the expiration date, you can download them at any time as long as you maintain an active PS Plus subscription.

Also note that even if you don’t have a PS5 just yet, you can head to the PlayStation Store via a browser to redeem the free PS5 games and build up a library of next-gen titles while you wait to get your hands on the new console.

Spiders’ 2019 hit GreedFall will make its way to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles. As of writing, the studio has yet to confirm when the next-gen version will arrive. It’s also unclear whether current owners of the RPG can expect to gain access to a free next-gen upgrade. In addition to developing new bells and whistles, Spiders plans to launch the eventual upgrade alongside fresh content. What said content entails remains publicly unknown for now.

Spiders’ tweet further reiterates sales-related information that was shared in August. Since its launch in September 2019, GreedFall has moved more than one million units worldwide. Such sales success also proved a boon for publisher Focus Home Interactive. The publisher’s 2019 profits especially benefited from the releases of the Spiders-developed RPG, A Plague Tale: Innocence, and World War Z.

Updating GreedFall for the new hardware is not all Spiders has up its sleeve, either. The team is additionally hard at work on another action-RPG, Steelrising. Nacon will publish the new adventure, which takes place in an alternate history version of the French Revolution. Players are to assume the role of Aegis, a female robot and bodyguard to Marie Antoinette. The premise centers around Aegis’ being tasked with stopping a mad King Louis XVI from wreaking havoc with unstable automatons. Steelrising presently lacks a release date.

GreedFall is out on the PS4, PC, and Xbox One. PlayStation Now subscribers can enjoy the title now, since it joined the service in August.

It’s previously been established that GreedFall was nothing short of a commercial success for Focus Home Interactive. Now the publisher is detailing just how successful. Since its launch nearly one year ago, the action-RPG from Spiders has moved more than one million units worldwide.

As Spiders founder Rousseau Jehanne noted in a separate post, this represents quite the feat for such small studio. Hopefully, such success serves as a stepping stone for the team’s receiving further exposure. In recent years, Spiders has been behind many a solid RPG experience that’s flown under the radar. PlayStation fans looking to give them a go are in luck. The studio’s 2016 title The Technomancer is available on PlayStation Now. And just yesterday, GreedFall joined the streaming service, as well.

Presently, the crew at Spiders is hard at work on another project, Steelrising. The RPG’s premise revolves around an alternate telling of the French Revolution, wherein players assume the role of Maria Antoinette’s robot bodyguard, Aegis. Better yet, Aegis will be tasked with taking on an army of robots, all of whom are under the control of King Louis Louis XVI. Apparently, the King assembled his mechanical forces in an early attempt to stifle the revolution’s progress.

GreedFall is out now for the PS4, PC, and Xbox One.

PlayStation Now is adding yet another impressive batch of titles to the lineup this month. Today, Dead Cells, GreedFall, and Hitman 2 all join the service. Both Dead Cells and Hitman 2 will remain available until early next year on February 1, 2021.

Agent 47’s adventures in Hitman 2 take him around the globe to various sandbox locations. Of course, each locale boasts a target to eliminate; 47 can dispatch each target in myriad ways. The how of it all, as always, is left entirely up to a player’s discretion. Hitman 2’s arrival on PS Now seems like perfect timing, given the recent announcement of Hitman 3. The final part in IO Interactive’s World of Assassination trilogy will launch in January 2021 on both current and next-gen consoles.

Dead Cells is an action-platformer from indie studio Motion Twin. It originally launched two years ago in August 2018, introducing quite the unique roguelike experience. If the threat of permadeath doesn’t keep players on edge, the punishing combat and challenging enemies most certainly will. Dead Cells‘ commercial success warrants praise in its own right as well. Since release, the roguelike has moved an impressive three million units worldwide.

GreedFall hit stores last year, filling the void for a solid narrative-driven RPG. The title sees players exploring uncharted land, finding riches, magic, and other forms of treasure. Aiding in the development of GreedFall’s remote island is also key to the experience. In turn, forging alliances for the sake of diplomacy plays a central role in the overarching narrative. The Spiders-developed project represented nothing short of a boon for publisher Focus Home Interactive, too.

All in all, this appears to be a great month to jump into PS Now for those who either haven’t given it a go or backed out in recent months. Thanks to last fall’s price drop, the service only costs $9.99 per month.

The development studio behind GreedFall, Spiders, is gearing up to announce its next big project. Such news is scheduled to go live next week during Nacon Connect on July 7th at 7:00pm CEST/10:00am PST. Details about the new title aren’t currently known to the public. However, publisher Nacon–formerly known as Bigben Interactive–shared a teaser image in the following Twitter post:

Spiders was founded well over a decade ago in France. In the several years since its establishment, the studio has produced a number of games. It first cut its teeth in the industry by helping developer Frogwares in porting Sherlock Holmes Versus Jack The Ripper to Xbox 360. But Spiders Games truly began making waves with the release of 2014’s Bound by Flame, a little known action-RPG published by Focus Home Interactive. The title didn’t review too favorably upon release, though the potential was evident.

It’s no surprise, then, that Spiders’ next project, the under-appreciated sci-fi RPG The Technomancer, further showcased the team’s potential. The company hit its stride with the launch of last year’s GreedFall, which essentially helped fill a void for the BioWare-style RPG that fans of the genre have long missed, this time in the largely empty AA game space that has gone underutilized during this current generation of hardware. It’s unknown if this next project will be a next-gen title or not, but regardless, it should be forwards compatible with the PS5 even if it only releases on PS4.

All that said, it does not seem too far beyond the realm of possibility that whatever Spiders is cooking up next will set yet another benchmark for the France-based studio. We’ll know for sure in just a few short days.
