Elsewhere, there is the tactical RPG Unicorn Overlord, or new off-road adventure Expeditions: A MudRunner Game.

GTA 6 Crunch

Just yesterday, Grand Theft Auto 6 developer Rockstar Games informed its employees they would be returning to the office full-time and scrapping remote work. Those employees have responded to the mandate, and they’re not happy. Some GTA 6 devs are even stating they fear a return to the “toxic ‘crunch’ practices” for which Rockstar was known during the development of games like Red Dead Redemption 2 and GTA V.

GTA 6 devs accuse Rockstar of broken promises

Rockstar has been trying to encourage its employees to return to the office since last year. When the developer tried to enforce a transition to a three-day office week in 2023, Rockstar claimed “this isn’t our first step to 5 days a week. No one wants to go back to the old way of working.” Now the GTA 6 devs are accusing Rockstar of breaking their promises following yesterday’s mandate that employees return to office full-time.

An anonymous employee told VGC that Rockstar is removing a remote working lifeline that allowed them to “balance care responsibilities, manage disabilities, and relocate as we need.” They continued:

Rockstar is snatching away that lifeline without a second thought for the workers who’ll be impacted most. After so many broken promises we now fear management may even be paving the way for a return to toxic ‘crunch’ practices. Senior leadership need to rethink their reckless decision making and engage with their staff to find an arrangement that works for everyone.

Rockstar had gained quite a reputation for its “toxic crunch practices” during previous games. Many of the accusations against the company involved 100-hour weeks, mandatory overtime, and fear tactics. As such, previous reports had claimed GTA 6 would be delayed until 2025 to avoid those crunch conditions.

However, mandatory overtime was a concern for another anonymous employee who said “just one of my concerns is being forced to work late hours in the office to maintain contact with global teams when before we could log on from home to attend late meetings.” The concerns have meant that the IWGB Game Workers Union has also issued a statement condemning Rockstar’s actions:

The workers in the IWGB Game Workers Union at Rockstar are pushing for transparency over pay and promotions, a healthy and inclusive workplace culture, and work life balance centred around what each worker needs. It is unacceptable that Rockstar leadership have gone back on their word time and time again and have ignored the workers’ requests for basic working conditions.

Workers across the industry are done with letting executives make reckless and harmful decisions and the Rockstar workers are showing us the start of what’s to come if they’re continually ignored. There’s no better time than now to join our union and push for this to be the healthy and sustainable games industry we know it can be.

IWGB Game Workers Union chairman Austin Kelmore

Rockstar is yet to comment.

Star Wars KOTOR Remake Development

Development on the troubled Star Wars: KOTOR Remake looks set to continue soon after reports claimed that developer Saber Interactive will split from Embracer Group. The developer will become a privately owned company and plans to continue the game’s development once the deal is complete.

Saber Interactive may get help from other studios on Star Wars: KOTOR Remake

Saber Interactive is set to be sold to a group of private investors in a deal worth up to $500 million according to sources who spoke to Bloomberg. This figure would also allow Saber Interactive to take multiple Embracer subsidiaries alongside them to help with the development of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake.

While part of Embracer Group, several other companies have already been merged into Saber Interactive; these include Demiurge Studios and New World Interactive. However, the sources did not specify which companies could be leaving Embracer alongside Saber.

The deal will be part of cost-cutting measures at Embracer Group following a failed $2 billion investment from a gaming group associated with Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund. This triggered a spate of layoffs and game cancelations.

Star Wars: KOTOR Remake was rumored to be one of those canceled games. Originally in development at Aspyr Media, development seemed steady until a vertical slice demo of the game was shown to Lucasfilm and Sony. Initial reports suggested both companies were happy with the game’s progress, but then Aspyr’s design director and art director were fired shortly after.

The game was delayed indefinitely before development was transferred to Saber Interactive, who had been assisting Aspyr Media with the remake. Rumors suggested development had ceased completely, although Embracer has always refused to confirm whether these rumors were true. The split from Embracer means Star Wars: KOTOR Remake development finally gets a chance to be completed.

Skull and Bones Season 1

Skull and Bones Season 1 Raging Tides has kicked off today, bringing along a new legendary pirate foe, world events, new leaderboard rewards, and quality-of-life improvements. While announcing the start of the new season, Ubisoft revealed the game has set a milestone by having the publisher’s second-highest-ever player engagement.

Skull and Bones Season 1 introduces Pirate Lord Philippe La Peste

The main attraction of Season 1 Raging Tides is the arrival of Plague Lord Phillipe La Peste and his legendary pirate ship, La Potence. A series of increasingly difficult seasonal events pit players against his Fleet of Pestilence to acquire Plaguebringer Captain Heads. The culmination is a World Event showdown at his base of operations, the Blighted Bastion, and a rare item reward. The Peste Control repeatable contract will also reward Silver and White Skull Gin in exchange for a gift of two Plaguebringer Captain heads to Robin Blackwood.

Two new Kingpin Bounties will take place at different points of the month. Between March 5 – 26 there is the Jaws of Retribution with the Sea Monster Zamaharibu hiding in the depths of the ocean. After that, the mysterious Ghost Ship Rode Maangodin will appear in Anguish from the Abyss from March 26 – April 16.

Other new world events introduce Elite Warships from both megacorporations (Opwelling) and local factions (Mizerja). Meanwhile, trade routes in the Indian Ocean are now populated with high-value Merchant Convoys. Finally, a new Smuggler Pass will offer rewards like the Healer Barque, Carronade, La Peste Schematics, and more.

Despite reports of a low player count, Ubisoft has said Skull and Bones has achieved record player engagement as gamers spend an average of four hours sailing the seas per day. Admittedly, Ubisoft didn’t mention how many of these hours were players trying out the free trial that has been available since the game launched.

Star Wars: Battlefront Classic Collection Mod

Star Wars: Battlefront Classic Collection will include all previously released bonus content for the two games. But developer Aspyr Media has been accused of stealing a player-made mod for this to happen.

The creator of the mod has recognized their work, complete with animation issues, in the collection’s announcement trailer. They’re calling upon Aspyr to download the fixed version of the mod before the games are released.

The Star Wars: Battlefront Classic Collection mod adds Xbox-exclusive characters

The mod for Star Wars Battlefront II was created by iamashaymin to add the Xbox-exclusive characters Kit Fisto and Asajj Ventress into the game’s PC version. The mod also ported some of the maps. In the Youtube video above, iamashaymin highlights the characters as they were shown in the collection’s announcement trailer and they have telltale animation issues like how Ventress’ legs animate or how she holds her sabers.

The mod creator actually doesn’t seem to mind that the mod has been used without their consultation but finds it “kinda annoying” that Aspyr used the “old ass DLC heroes.” iamashaymin is now urging Aspyr to download the latest version of the mod to use in the collection as it has “some serious improvements” and fixes all of the issues mentioned above.

Star Wars: Battlefront Classic Collection brings the original Star Wars Battlefront and Star Wars Battlefront II to PS5 and PS4 on March 14. The collection has improvements like online play for up to 64 players and expansions to Hero Assault mode, as well as the aforementioned previously released bonus content. The latter includes the Jabba’s Palace map from Battlefront and four maps from Battlefront II: Bespin: Cloud City, Rhen Var: Harbor, Rhen Var: Citadel, and Yavin 4: Arena. There are also the two bonus heroes at the center of the mod dispute.

Dying Light 2 Bloody Ties Free

Techland has made the Dying Light 2 Bloody Ties DLC free for existing players following the release of the new Reloaded Edition. The latest update for the game, the Firearms Update, was also released today and introduces firearms to the game for the first time, as well as a host of other new features.

The Dying Light 2 Bloody Ties DLC is free for existing players

The Bloody Ties DLC offer is available for all players who already own the game’s standard edition so that they’re upgraded to the Reloaded Edition for free. The Reloaded Edition, which celebrates the game’s second anniversary, includes the Bloody Ties DLC and all game updates like New Game Plus and Photo Mode.

The Firearms Update is also included in the Reloaded Edition and became available for existing players today. The game’s biggest-ever update adds firearms — pistols, shotguns, rifles, and SMGs — to the arsenal, although Techland states they’re “an enhancement rather than a complete change of genre” and “open new possibilities without altering the DNA of the game.” All players who have completed the prologue before March 7 will get the Harran Pistol in their stash.

Other new features in today’s update include Survivor Missions. These are intended to test all of a player’s skills and are intended for co-op play, although solo play is possible. More Survivor Missions will be added on February 29 and March 7.

The bulletin boards of Villedor also have new missions with more items to earn for their completion, such as the Doppelganger Legend outfit. There are 50 more Legend Levels to earn too. Meanwhile, the original Dying Light’s Tolga and Fatin arrive in The City on February 29 with requests for assistance.

Away from the campaign, there are more bounties at Pilgrim Outpost which are specifically designed for Community Maps. These include Anniversary Bounties that are available between today, February 22, and 12:00 CET on March 7. The rewards for completing these include throwback items from the original Dying Light and the 2019 E3 trailer: the Scorpio, the Nocturnal Tribal Machete, and the Acolyte outfit.

Xbox and PC-exclusive MOBA Gigantic closed its doors in 2018 and many thought they would never see the game again. It seems that Gearbox Publishing had other ideas, and the game will be making a surprise return later this year as Gigantic: Rampage Edition, only this time it will be on PS5 and PS4, too.

Gigantic: Rampage Edition will not be free-to-play

The main difference between the old and new versions of the game is that the game is no longer free-to-play. Gigantic: Rampage Edition will be a “premium experience” that releases on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One on April 9. This means there won’t be any microtransactions; all content can be unlocked through gameplay or bought with in-game currency earned by playing.

Gigantic features two teams of five players battling it out to kill their enemy’s guardian creature while simultaneously protecting their own from the same fate. The Rampage Edition will bring back 23 heroes, each with their own offensive and defensive capabilities, as well as ultimate abilities. There will also be two new heroes: Roland and Kajir. Customizable hero loadouts will offer hero and weapon skins to suit every playstyle.

The game will launch with three game modes. There’s the original Clash mode and a brand new Rush mode that promises to be a “more accessible, fast-paced and action-packed mode.” Custom matches will then let players pick a map and mode to compete against their friends. As well as the original maps, two new maps — Picaro Bay and Heaven’s Ward — will be introduced. Cross-play will be available between consoles and PC.

New developer Abstraction Games promises a program of free post-launch content that includes a Ranked Mode and new hero skins. Those who want to try the game before it is released can sign up for the closed beta that starts on February 22, but it’s only available on Steam.

A total of 25 games are coming to PS5 this week, while PS4 players get a slightly shorter list of 22 titles. Both PS5 and PS4 get the delights of Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate – Daemonhunters, a turn-based tactics game that pits the player’s Grey Knights against the forces of Nurgle as they prevent the release of a plague on the galaxy.

However, most of the highlights can only be found on PS5. Pacific Drive puts its own twist on the survival horror genre as the player’s car plays an important part in surviving the anomalies and hazards of the Olympic Peninsula. Meanwhile, the dark fantasy retelling of Arthurian legend, King Arthur: Knight’s Tale, finally makes its way to console. Finally, there’s The Lost Legends of Redwall: The Scout Anthology, a puzzle adventure game based on Brian Jacques’ Redwall book series.

Skull and Bones Free Trial

Skull and Bones is offering a free trial for players who want to try the pirate game before they buy and it launches today, the same day as the game itself. The trial does not have limited availability and will be sticking around for quite a while. So if you have other gaming plans this weekend, there’s no need to rearrange them.

What’s in the Skull and Bones free trial?

The trial gives players unrestricted access to Skull and Bones for eight hours. All activities will be available to increase your infamy level, including exploring the seas, completing contracts, searching for hidden loot in treasure hunts, plundering forts, embarking on voyages, and taking part in high-stakes naval battles. Increasing infamy and climbing up the ranks will open up the opportunity to obtain better ships, weapons, attachments, and furniture.

The Skull and Bones trial can be downloaded right now from the PlayStation Store and can be played solo or in co-op for up to three players. Once those eight hours are over, all progress and unlocked items can be transferred to the full version of the game if players choose to purchase it in the future. As well as the standard edition, there is also a Premium Edition that includes a Smugglers Pass Token, the premium Ballad of Bloody Bones Collection, and two extra missions in addition to other digital goodies.

The publisher’s post-launch plans for the first year of release include four seasons of free and premium content alongside free limited-time events. The aforementioned Smugglers Pass token will allow Premium Edition owners to unlock a Premium Smuggler Pass of their choice.

Ubisoft is hoping that its quadruple-A game will be one of the reasons for record annual net bookings during the next financial quarter. Allowing players to try before they buy is a great way of increasing the player base.
