PlayStation LifeStyle Game of the Year 2023

Unfortunately, 2023 wasn’t the best year for PlayStation exclusives. The only title from Sony’s stable to make it on our Game of the Year 2023 list is Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. However, there were plenty of third-party masterpieces to make up for it. Check out our favorite games of the year below!

PlayStation LifeStyle Game of the Year 2023 List:

10. Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty

Cyberpunk 2077’s had a long road to redemption. When Son kicked the game off the PlayStation Store because of technical issues, we never thought its DLC would end up on our Game of the Year list two years later. Phantom Liberty has enough content to be a game in its own right and offers an alternate take on how V’s journey could have ended up. Unfortunately, the DLC and the 2.0 update that launched alongside it are only available on PS5. However, if you have the PS4 version, you can still upgrade for free!

9. Final Fantasy 16

It seems inevitable that Final Fantasy 16 will be one of the more divisive entries in the series. It primarily concentrates on one character, Clive Rosfield, as opposed to a huge party, and the story is focused on his perspective. For some fans, that eschews franchise tradition, but we appreciated the narrowed focus compared to Final Fantasy 15, which was a bit all over the place. Clive’s story stands out as one of the more poignant we’ve seen in a Final Fantasy, and it’s a spectacle to behold.

8. Assassin’s Creed Mirage

This pseudo-prequel to Assassin’s Creed Valhalla takes the series back to its roots and pays homage to the original. Unlike the sprawling epics we’ve gotten in the last few entries, Assassin’s Creed Mirage is localized to 9th-century Baghdad and ditches many of the role-playing elements to emphasize stealth, assassinations, and parkour. We couldn’t help but be relieved to play a distilled experience, and Basim Ibn Ishaq’s origin story reminded us why we fell in love with the franchise in the first place.

7. Hogwarts Legacy

Despite the controversy surrounding the Harry Potter franchise, Hogwarts Legacy managed to captivate us with its rendition of the titular wizarding school and the surrounding countryside. For those of us who grew up alongside Harry, the chance to attend Hogwarts was a dream come true. Exploring its nooks and crannies, attending classes, and seeing the many easter eggs the developers included was a treat. Where Hogwarts Legacy goes above and beyond, though, is that the gameplay is fun enough to stand on its own merits. Even if this is your first visit to Hogwarts, you can still have a blast and leave wanting more.

6. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order itched the scratch Star Wars fans had for years when it was released in 2019, and we couldn’t wait to get back to a galaxy far, far away in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. It’s everything the first game was, but bigger and better. Cal gets more abilities and equipment, environments are more expensive, and we even get to chill in a cantina whenever we want. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor provides the excitement that most of Disney’s projects have lacked and has done much more to keep the franchise alive than it gets credit for.

5. Street Fighter 6

Street Fighter 6 is our favorite fighting game of the year because of its respect for newcomers and veterans. It’s an excellent point to enter the series, thanks to its revamped mechanics and multiple control options. However, it still retains enough of the franchise’s traditions to keep from alienating those who cut their teeth on SF 2-5. We also loved the absolutely bonkers story mode that channeled Yakuza to make one of the best create-a-fighter experiences ever. If you have even a little interest in the fighting genre, it’s worth checking this game out.

4. Resident Evil 4 remake

Resident Evil 4 revolutionized the series when it debuted in 2005 and is lauded as one of the best games ever. Its influence on gaming as a whole is so strong that many doubted that a remake could do it justice. However, Capcom managed to pull off a fantastic retelling that complements the original perfectly. Almost every aspect of the original has been remade or expanded, and the updated gameplay makes blasting through Ganados a thrill. Resident Evil 4 remake is another excellent entry in the alternate continuity started with RE2 remake, and we’re excited to see which game gets reimagined next (fingers crossed for Code Veronica)!

3. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2

Marvel’s Spider-Man and its Miles Morales-centric follow-up were hard acts to follow. Somehow, Insomniac Games managed to outdo themselves and then some with Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Peter Parker and Miles join forces to take on a multitude of threats while navigating their personal lives. From Kraven the Hunter’s militaristic menace to the symbiote Venom sapping Peter of both his good nature and healthy relationships, this gutsy sequel took an already solid foundation and gave both heroes an expanded inventory of unlockable abilities, gadgets, and suits with which fans could explore and defend New York City. While this movie could have resulted in a tired storyline or rote gameplay loop, instead it strengthened an already excellent series with thoughtful writing, inclusive characters, and comic book-powered combat to satisfy all players. The biggest problem with this tandem adventure is that it eventually has to end.

2. Baldur’s Gate 3

Player agency has been a hot topic in the gaming industry for decades. Some studios like to keep players focused on the task at hand, while others open their worlds up for a bit more interaction. However, with Baldur’s Gate 3, Larian Studios went beyond this. It removed practically all limitations to how a player could affect their surroundings. See a locked door? You can talk the key out of an NPC, blow it down, find a hidden route to completely bypass it, or simply ignore it. The challenge in this CRPG is to find your way, and there are so many possibilities and so much raw content that everyone’s playthrough will be different.

1. Alan Wake 2

It took 13 years for Alan Wake 2 to be released, but the wait was worth it. FBI agent Saga Anderson joins Alan’s struggle to escape the Dark Place, and we’re once again thrust into the madness surrounding the town of Bright Falls. The plot is a roller coaster examining family, religion, and the supernatural, and it had us hooked from beginning to end. Excellent pacing keeps the lengthy story from becoming a slog, and the ability to alternate between Saga and Alan’s story means each player will have a slightly different experience during their playthrough. While it’s rooted in survival horror, we recommend this game to anyone who wants a strong single-player experience.

Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition on PS5 doesn't have DLC on disc

Cyberpunk 2077’s Ultimate Edition was announced yesterday, and curiously, the PS5 version doesn’t have the Phantom Liberty DLC on disc. The move has left fans puzzled because the Xbox Series X|S physical edition does come with everything on disc. Apparently, the issue is on Sony’s end rather than CD Projekt RED‘s.

Why Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition on PS5 doesn’t have DLC on disc

According to Digital Foundry’s John Linneman, Sony mandates building a separate game SKU should developers want to release its DLC on disc later down the line. He claims to have heard about this issue from other developers, although neither CD Projekt RED nor Sony have commented in this particular instance.

When a follower asked if building a new SKU is a lot of work, Linneman said that he believes CD Projekt RED would have to recompile Cyberpunk 2077 with the DLC included as a separate version “which means resubmission to Sony.” He recons that costs time as well as money.

Nevertheless, PS5 players are unhappy with the move, as can be seen by the responses to the tweet below.

It’s highly unlikely that CD Projekt RED will change its mind since the discs will be on store shelves as soon as December 5.

  • Addicted To Chaos – Fixed an issue where it could become impossible to complete the quest if the stash is looted before receiving the message with the code.
  • Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos – Fixed an issue where, under specific circumstances, the quest could remain active even after failing it by not following the traces left by Songbird.
  • Firestarter – It will no longer be possible to disassemble the stadium security datashard after looting it from Hansen’s body, thus blocking quest progression.
  • Firestarter – It will now be possible to pick up the Bald Eagle weapon after siding with Songbird.
  • Gig: Roads to Redemption – Fixed an issue where the door leading to the stadium’s weapons factory could be opened by accident earlier in Firestarter, which later interfered with gig progression and could lock the player behind the door.

  • Somewhat Damaged – Fixed an issue where Cerberus wouldn’t spawn until the corridor chase scene if the player fired a weapon in a specific spot near terminal Sierra.
  • Somewhat Damaged – Removed the attribute check from doors when locked in the Observation Room and adjusted the objective to make it clearer that hiding from Cerberus is required to progress.
  • Spider and the Fly – Fixed an issue where the boss fight with the Chimera might not start.
  • The Damned – Fixed an issue where the quest objective disappeared after the meeting in The Moth, thus blocking progress.

  • The Beast in Me – Fixed an issue where it wasn’t possible to shoot from the vehicle during the race.

Gameplay

  • Rebalanced the stats of some weapons based on player feedback.
  • The Malorian Arms 3516 received a buff. Recoil is easier to handle, even at low stamina, and damage was increased.
  • Crafting specs for Iconic weapons will now disappear after crafting the item.
  • Added stats to the tooltip of Monowire that were missing.
  • Fixed an issue where it was possible to duplicate junk items.
  • Bullets now deal damage correctly when shooting through glass.
  • Fixed an issue where it was possible to easily obtain Tier 5 Skill Shards early in the game. Their prices have also been adjusted.
  • Disabled the Bait quickhack on enemies standing at the edge of an area they’re not supposed to leave.

  • Fixed some specific instances where crowd NPCs could clip through vehicles while walking.
  • Fixed an issue that could cause elevators in various quests to spawn on an incorrect floor if a save/load was performed after they started moving.
  • Fixed an issue where the appearance of V’s hands in first-person perspective might not change correctly after installing or uninstalling arm cyberware.

PC-specific

  • Selecting default graphics settings should now pick the proper Quick Preset based on your hardware and according to the latest system recommendations.
  • Introduced a mechanism for the detection of mismatched or corrupted scripts, which are caused by outdated mods or file corruption during update/installation. It will now show a descriptive error message and close the game instead of resulting in a crash.

Console-specific

  • Increased the sav.dat internal buffer size to 15MiB without increasing the overall max save size.
  • Refactored the saving process to not overwrite a save until we know that the data is valid – this helps prevent save corruption in case there’s not enough space for saving.

Miscellaneous

  • Various optimizations, performance improvements, and crash fixes.
  • Fixed an issue where some achievements or trophies could unlock after loading a pre-2.0 save on 2.01 despite not meeting the criteria for them. Please note that this fix will not reset already unlocked achievements.

  • Fixed an issue where NPCs could appear stretched out when affected by explosions or the Savage Sling ability.
  • Fixed an issue where tooltips on the map and interaction prompts for renting apartments showed double the actual price.
  • Blocked Cross-progression from uploading saves bigger than the max save size limit on consoles to prevent crashes and issues when importing such saves.
  • Remastered the voiceover to improve audio quality in German, Simplified Chinese, and Japanese.

Viktor Vektor in Cyberpunk 2077.

Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt Red used AI to replicate a voice actor in its Phantom Liberty expansion.

Per Bloomberg, Cyberpunk 2077’s Miłogost Reczek passed away in 2021. The actor had previously played V’s friend Viktor Vektor in the base game, but CD Projekt Red planned to bring back the character for Phantom Liberty in a small role. At first, the team debated recasting Viktor and recording the lines from the main game to maintain continuity. However, the developers agreed it would be disrespectful to Reczek.

How CDPR used AI for Cyberpunk 2077

“We didn’t like this approach,” said CD Projekt localization director Mikołaj Szwed. He explained that Reczek “was one of the best Polish voice talents,” calling his performance “stellar.” Ultimately, they received permission from Reczek’s sons to use AI so they “could keep his performance in the game and pay tribute to his wonderful performance as Viktor Vektor.” Ultimately, the developer contacted Reczek’s family and got permission to use AI for the expansion. According to Szwed, Reczek’s sons fully supported the idea.

CD Projekt Red used Respeecher to create the AI performance. In this technique, the team had another actor record the lines. Then, they ran the performance through the program and made it sound like the actor. Respeecher did this through the use of Reczek’s past work as samples.

The use of AI to recreate Reczek’s performance comes at a time when SAG-AFTRA is striking partly against such uses of the technology. In recent years, AI has threatened actors and writers, with some companies showing a shift toward using it as a time and money saver. The Writers Guild of America just finished negotiations with Hollywood to prevent AI replacement in writing.

Cyberpunk 2077 is available on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. The expansion, Phantom Liberty, is only available on the PS5.

Cyberpunk 2077 patch 2.01 bug

It’s fair to say that Cyberpunk 2077’s 2.0 update was a pretty big success. Essentially a soft relaunch of the game, it gave players a good reason to revisit CD Projekt Red’s sci-fi RPG. However, it appears that Cyberpunk 2077’s 2.01 update broke some of the game’s skills.

Cyberpunk 2.01 disables some passive Skill buffs

Cyberpunk 2077’s skills are passive buffs that players level up by performing specific in-game actions. For example, the Headhunter skill provides various useful stealth bonuses for both close-quarters and long-range sniping. Players level it up by scoring headshots, using thrown or silenced weapons, using pistols, and performing stealth takedowns. Unfortunately, a bug in Cyberpunk 2077’s 2.01 update affects all five skills, hitting Headhunter particularly hard.

A few days ago, Reddit user Dibilowas noticed that the Headhunder buff that reduces weapon sway didn’t seem to work. After a bit of experimentation and communicating with other players, they determined that several skill passives no longer work. Specifically, Headhunter’s level 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 55, and 60 aren’t working. Shinobi’s level 20, 40, 45, 50, and 55 buffs seem broken, as are levels 40 and 45 of Solo. Finally, the buffs from level 20 of Netrunner and level 20 of Engineer are also not working.

The bug only seems to affect skills, with Cyberpunk 2077’s attributes, perks, cyberware capacity, and armor seemingly working as intended. However, the bugged skills are still a severe problem for some players, especially on higher difficulties.

One Cyberpunk 2077 modder has already created a patch that fixes the bugged skills. The mod is available from Nexus Mods and requires the REDSCRIPT script compiler to function. Unfortunately, console players will need to wait until the next official update.

Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty release date

Even though Cyberpunk 2077‘s big 2.0 update released earlier this week, CD Projekt Red is already hard at work on getting the next update for the game out.

According to a recent blog post on the developer’s website, Cyberpunk 2077’s 2.01 update is in the works, and “coming soon.” This update looks to mainly fix some crashing issues players have been running into, as well as fixing a rare issue where players on PlayStation were finding their save data corrupted.

Aside from those two big fixes, the new Cyberpunk 2077 update will also feature “performance improvements” on console and PC.

Cyberpunk 2077 Update 2.01 patch notes

  • The distorted effect caused by selecting a specific dialogue option when talking to Johnny at the end of Automatic Love will no longer persist on the screen.
  • V will no longer die in The Heist by falling through the elevator when riding to the 42nd floor with low FPS.
  • Fixed an issue where the UI could show controller inputs when playing with keyboard and mouse.
  • Made it possible to properly switch to arms cyberware by cycling through weapons.
  • Gig: Breaking News will be properly triggered after approaching the quest area.
  • Vehicle radio volume will be adjusted so it’s not too quiet when compared to other sounds in the game.
  • Addressed the issue of corrupted saves on PlayStation by increasing the maximum save file size limit. Note: this won’t fix the saves corrupted before the update. If you’re experiencing the issue, keep a working save (e.g. resave it as manual save) till 2.01 arrives.
  • Performance improvements for both PC and consoles, especially in the Dogtown area.

Cyberpunk 2077 update 2.0 contents vs Phantom Liberty DLC contents

CD Projekt RED has provided a list of features included in Cyberpunk 2077‘s free update 2.0 and premium Phantom Liberty expansion. There was some confusion among fans regarding the free update’s contents, which these handy lists should clear up.

Cyberpunk 2077 update 2.0 and Phantom Liberty DLC contents

The free update includes:

  • Redesigned skill trees and perks
  • Revamped cyberware and new capacity system
  • Vehicle combat and car chases
  • Combat AI improvements
  • New police system
  • UI and UX improvements
  • Loot, items, and crafting changes
  • New radio stations (including Community Radio Station Growl FM)

The premium Phantom Liberty expansion includes:

  • Dogtown – dangerous new district
  • Brand-new storyline and characters
  • New quests, gigs, boss fights and more
  • Vehicle missions and airdrops — endless dynamic events
  • All-new Relic skill tree and abilities
  • 100+ new items — weapons, cyberware, cars, and fashion
  • Vehicle missile launchers
  • Level cap increased to 60

The update will also come with bug fixes and quality-of-life improvements, patch notes for which will become available nearer the time. We’ll make sure to share those for our readers here.

CD Projekt RED still hasn’t said when it’ll release Cyberpunk 2077’s GOTY edition, which was confirmed last year. The complete edition will presumably come with the updated base game and Phantom Liberty.

Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty

CD Projekt RED has reiterated that Cyberpunk 2077‘s Phantom Liberty is the only expansion it has planned for the 2020 RPG. Starring Idris Alba, the expansion will be released on September 26.

Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty is the last Red Engine game for the time being

Speaking to investors in a recent earnings call (transcript via VGC), SVP of business development Michał Nowakowski said that the decision to make only one expansion for Cyberpunk 2077 was a “technological” one. It apparently had nothing to do with Cyberpunk 2077’s sales and whether CDPR is satisfied with the game’s commercial performance or not.

“This is the last time we’re working on the Red Engine for the time being at least, and in the foreseeable future as you know we are working on the Unreal Engine from Epic,” Nowakowski said. “This was one of the key reasons why we decided this was the only one.”

CDPR has made it clear that it has no plans to change its mind. The studio has already moved much of Cyberpunk 2077’s development staff to the next mainline Witcher game in order to ramp up its production.

CDPR previously said that it’ll release Cyberpunk 2077 Game of the Year Edition in 2023. We’re guessing that the title will hit store shelves during the holiday season.

While Cyberpunk 2077 fans are eagerly awaiting the arrival of the Phantom Liberty DLC, there’s some bad news at CD Projekt Red as the developer is looking to implement several layoffs by next year.

CDPR wants to be transparent

In an “organizational update” over on the studio’s website, CD Projekt Red has shared some news “regarding the future shape of our teams and our game development philosophy.” While the post opens with how much is currently in development from the Witcher creator, it also mentions that the company will be “parting ways” with some of its staff.

More specifically, 100 employees will be “let go as late as Q1 2024.” This represents around 9% of the entire CDPR team. By mentioning it to the public now, and giving at least a few month’s prior notice, the developer is hoping that those working at the studio who will be affected by this will have “ample time to process and adjust to the change.”

Of course, it’s never good news when people get let go, especially from huge companies that seem to be doing well. Layoffs seem to be coming more common in this era of gaming, which is worrying for those who work in the industry.

That aside, CD Projekt Red marches forward with its intended projects. The studio is currently working on a new The Witcher saga, a remake of the first game, a new IP (codenamed “Hader”), as well as a Cyberpunk sequel. It’s all go for the Polish developer then. It’s just a shame a good portion of its team won’t be around for these upcoming games.

Cyberpunk 2077 Sequel Job Listing

A job posting for a Cyberpunk 2077 sequel has been listed by CD Projekt RED on its official website. It’s surprising that the studio would be so blunt to state so explicitly that it’s looking for people interested in making a “Cyberpunk 2077 sequel,” especially when the Phantom Liberty DLC and we suspect more DLC for the original game aren’t even out yet. CD Projekt RED revealed news about a Cyberpunk 2077 sequel, along with new The Witcher games, in October 2022.

New Boston studio will be a part of the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel

The job listing is for a spontaneous application to gauge interest in joining CD Projekt Red’s newest studio in Boston to work on a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077. They are asking for applicants to drop their resumes, which will kept confidential in accordance with EEO guidelines.

As previously reported, this sequel has been given the codename Project Orion and will follow the Phantom Liberty expansion for the original game. It was announced around the same time as the wonderful Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime on Netflix, which caused an influx of new players to try the game.

According to the product outlook description, the sequel looks to be a direct follow-up to the first game and won’t be some kind of spin-off or DLC.
