Those who are waking up on February 29 with hopes of playing the rhythm game Theatrhythm Final Bar Line may find a bit of a surprise. It turns out there’s a glitch that’s preventing people from playing on this particular day. And only on this particular day.

Something Square Enix forgot to take into account

Users across social media and on the Theatrhythm subreddit have been having problems with their save file today. When they try to load up their game, they’re met by a black screen that never finishes connecting. While some feared that their data was corrupted, it’s thankfully not that serious of an issue. The issue is actually due to Theatrhythm Final Bar Line not recognizing the date February 29, as the developers failed to take leap years into consideration.

If you’ve experienced a similar problem with your game just loading into a black screen, a solution has been offered. Basically, if you change the system clock back to a prior date, it should work. It should also be fixed if the date is set after February 29 as well.

At the time of writing, Square Enix hasn’t come forward with a statement about this date-based oversight. However, it does appear there is a quick solution, but it may be in the publisher’s best interests to perhaps offer a patch for the game.

Theatrhythm Final Bar Line was released last February for PS4 and Nintendo Switch. It’s a rhythm game set in the Final Fantasy universe. It’s the fifth installment in the Theatrhythm subseries, with the first entry released back in 2012.

Sonic Superstars: Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy flying through a blue sky.

Sonic Superstars was released last October, but it’s possible that rival titles released at the same time could have been responsible for the game not selling as well as hoped. Given that Nintendo launched Super Mario Bros. Wonder a few days after the new Sonic title, this could have affected sales.

Timing “coincided with competing titles”

According to a recent English-translated Q&A from Sega (via VGC), Sonic Superstars has been “been well received by those who have played it.” However, the release of “competing titles” around the same time has meant the game has “been short of the initial forecast.”

While Sega doesn’t specifically mention Super Mario Bros. Wonder as being the sole reason behind the lack of expected Sonic Superstars sales, the use of the phrase “titles in the same genre” may lead people to draw their own conclusions on that front.

The new Mario Bros. game was released on October 20, 2023, just three days after Superstars came out. The sheer might of the Mario brand could well have been a factor in the blue blur falling short of expectations. However, there doesn’t appear to be any proof of this.

The VGC report goes on to say that the only other games released around the same time that are of any note include: SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shakedown and DreamWorks Trolls Remix Rescue. It doesn’t seem likely that these would have affected the new Sonic game much.

While Sega insists fans enjoyed Sonic Superstars, current review scores are down as “Mixed” on Steam. Some free DLC, which featured a Shadow the Hedgehog costume, was released for the game a couple of weeks ago.

Resident Evil 4 Remake: Chainsaw Man, AKA Dr. Salvador, revving up his chainsaw.

A few months back, Resident Evil 4 Remake revealed the trailer for its upcoming VR mode. Now, the wait is nearly over, as the release date for the feature has now officially been announced.

Free update for PS5 users as well

In a recent post on the official RE Twitter account, a teaser proclaimed that Resident Evil 4 Remake VR will be available starting December 8. It’ll be compatible with the PlayStation VR2 headset, which was released in February of this year.

There will be a demo available at the same time, and the tweet goes on to say that PS5 players will be entitled to the VR mode as a free update.

Launching in March, Capcom‘s modern take on the original RE4 was met with plenty of praise. Continuing the trend of successfully remaking classic Resident Evil games, this latest one retained much of what people love about the 2005 release while bringing it more up-to-date.

The Separate Ways DLC also came out, which tells the story from the perspective of Ada Wong.

And if the VR update wasn’t enough, Resident Evil 4 is also said to be coming to iOS, with it due to be released on December 20. RE Village was released to mobile recently, so it’s not surprising that the former is being given the iOS treatment as well.

Considered by many fans to be one of – if not the – best RE game of all time, Resident Evil 4 Remake was a tall order for Capcom. Luckily, the developer managed to knock it out of the park.

Tekken 8: a close-up of Lee Kliesen.

In the run-up to the release of Tekken 8, developer and publisher Bandai Namco has treated us to a sneak peek at Leo Kliesen and his style of fighting. While we already know the complete roster of the upcoming game, it’s nice to see a familiar face in action.

The traditional Chinese art of Bajiquan

As always, the latest Tekken 8 trailer contains a large amount of ass-kicking as Leo shows off his Bajiquan mastery on Jin Kazama and Azucena. Fans of the series will no doubt be looking forward to taking control of the “Seeker of Truth” in the upcoming release.

Appearing for the first time in Tekken 6, Leo is technically one of the newer members of the iconic fighting franchise. However, given that this particular entry came out in 2007 (if you count the arcade release), that means he has been part of the roster for over a decade and a half at this point.

Tekken has been a staple on consoles and in arcades since the mid-1990s. The first installment was made available on the original PlayStation way back in 1994. Consisting of just eight main characters, plus ten unlockable ones, the OG release has since aged, but the series is still going strong.

Now, with the eighth entry on the way, we’ll be getting over 30 characters to play with and fight against. It’s hard to imagine that Bandai Namco Entertainment would be able to keep it going successfully for almost three decades.

Tekken 8 will be released on January 26, 2024, and will be available on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

It’s too early to say yet, but there is a possibility that Guitar Hero may make a comeback at some point in the future. That’s according to Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick, who mentioned the series recently.

All said in a leaked interview

In a report from Windows Central, a leaked interview between Kotick and British actor James Corden discussed the possible future of Activision. The information comes just as the company is due to close a deal in which Microsoft will be acquiring the Call of Duty and Overwatch company.

Among other things, Kotick spoke about possible technological innovations for gaming in the future. There were discussions about research, AI and machine learning capabilities, and data analytics.

Looking ahead to what’s on the horizon, Kotick then dropped the name Guitar Hero into a conversation about Activision’s back catalog. “The re-emergence of Guitar Hero and other things would not be possible without the different types of resources,” said Kotick. “And so, you know, just the endless possibilities for the future that are just incredibly exciting.”

This suggests that the once-popular rhythm series could be making a return or is at least on Kotick’s mind. However, it’s best to temper expectations for now, but many will be eager to know whether the franchise will surface again.

Beginning with the first installment in 2005, Guitar Hero became a worldwide phenomenon. The third entry alone – Legends of Rock – generated over $1 billion in revenue, becoming one of the best-selling games of 2007.

Sadly, while subsequent games were successful – such as the Aerosmith and Metallica games – the series’ popularity dropped off before the end of the first decade in the 2000s. Numerous spin-offs, such as DJ Hero, and competing brands from the likes of Rock Band meant the era of music-based gaming loaded with plastic accessories quickly became a saturated market.

However, in the current climate of remakes and reboots, it’s likely that many would love to see a return to Guitar Hero, for nostalgia if nothing else.

As it stands, we don’t know what Kotick or Activision Blizzard has in store for the series, but there’s hope it’ll see the light of day one more time.

Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden: A close-up of a gruff man with a beard.

Those of you who’ve been looking forward to Don’t Nod‘s upcoming action RPG Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden will be saddened to hear that the studio has had to delay the game until next year.

Seemingly to avoid clashing with other big releases

In a recent press release on the developer’s website – with a similar message posted on Twitter/X – Don’t Nod (formerly Dontnod Entertainment) has said it’ll be postponing the release of Ghosts of New Eden until February 13, 2024. The game was originally scheduled to launch on November 7, 2023.

According to the company, the title is “finished and set for release,” but the team decided to delay the launch, citing “an intense release cycle for AAA titles on PC and consoles at the end of the year.”

With huge releases from big names like Call of Duty, not to mention the RoboCop adaptation Rogue City, happening in November, it stands to reason that the French developer would want to give its new game as much breathing room as possible. Launching something in conjunction with many other popular franchises can risk leaving less-known titles behind.

From the people that brought us the Life Is Strange series, Ghosts of Eden is a third-person game that follows the story of two ghost hunters, Antea Duarte and Red mac Raith. It’s being published by Focus Entertainment, known for a slew of popular titles, including Vampyr, which was also developed by Don’t Nod.

The studio has said it hopes the three-month delay means Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden will be given the “attention it deserves” away from a busy AAA release schedule.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor: Cal Kestis holding a blue lightsaber.

Prepare yourselves, Star Wars fans, as a third installment in the Jedi series is said to be in development, according to Cal Kestis’ voice actor. Details are scarce, but the actor has said that it’s currently something that’s being worked on.

Confirmed at Ocala Comic Con 2023

Cameron Monaghan – along with Tina Inlev (who voiced Nightsister Merrin in both Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor) – confirmed that the team is “currently in the process” of making the next game.

Monaghan adds that conversations are underway for the third installment, with a view to begin making it soon. You can check out the entire panel in the video below. The information regarding the new Jedi game begins around the 42:35 mark when the host asks both actors what projects they currently have in the pipeline.

Obviously, it’s too early to say what the story will be about, when it’s likely to be released, or even what platforms it’s coming to. However, Monaghan seems excited about what awaits fans of the recent Star Wars games.

This information comes shortly after it was announced that Fallen Order and Survivor’s director, Stig Asmussen, announced he was leaving Electronic Arts. Revealed by Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, a spokesperson for EA confirmed Asmussen has decided to “pursue other adventures” and that “veteran leaders” at Respawn Entertainment will be taking the helm on future Star Wars Jedi releases.

With both Fallen Order and Survivor being big hits, no doubt many Star Wars enthusiasts will be looking forward to the next entry. We can only assume that Monaghan will be reprising his role as Cal Kestis.

Tales of the Shire: A peaceful looking landscape of small hills.

From the publisher that brought us Kerbal Space Program comes Tales of the Shire, a “heart-warming” game set in J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy world. The title is set to launch on PC and console sometime in 2024.

Described as “cozy”

Developed by TV, film, and game studio Wētā Workshop, and published by Private Division, not much is known about Tales of the Shire. A brief teaser trailer was released but doesn’t reveal anything beyond its rather snug aesthetic, as a woman is seen sketching in her notebook.

The game will be set in Middle-Earth as part of the Lord of the Rings universe, but there don’t appear to be any details about the story so far. A press release says it will be “fully revealed next year.”

All we really know at this stage is that a pleasant and rather restful “Hobbit life awaits.” You can follow the game on social media to stay up-to-date.

In terms of platforms, we don’t know that either. We know it’s coming to PC, but we can also expect it to be released on current-gen consoles, possibly even previous-gen. However, that’s just speculation on our part.

By far one of the most influential fantasy franchises of all time, The Lord of the Rings has been a dense source for video game adaptations. While the majority of titles typically focus on action and/or the original books/movies, Tales of the Shire sounds like it may be offering something a little different.

No doubt additional information will be inbound soon, so we’ll hopefully be able to reveal more as time goes on.

For those excited about the continuation of the beloved Yakuza series, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth has been confirmed for release on January 26, 2024. The game is set to launch on previous and current-gen consoles, as well as on PC. It received two new trailers today, one focusing on story and the other on gameplay.

Watch Two New Trailers

Infinite Wealth will be available both physically and digitally on the above-mentioned date. It’ll be coming to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, as well as the Microsoft Store and Steam.

A direct sequel to 2020’s Yakuza: Like a Dragon, this upcoming installment is the eighth main entry in the action series and will feature two “larger-than-life heroes, Ichiban Kasuga and Kazuma Kiryu,” who are “brought together by the hand of fate.”

You’ll get to explore Yokohama’s Isezaki Ijincho as well as Hawaii, which is the first time the series has branched out to an overseas location.

The game will be released in a number of editions. First and foremost is the standard version of infinite Money, but you can also get the Deluxe Edition, which comes with the Master Vacation Bundle.

But if you’re feeling extra flash, you can opt for the Ultimate Edition. This will set you back $109.99 but does come with everything the previous versions boast, along with some additional bundles and the Yakuza CD collection set.

There’s also a pre-order bonus called the Hero’s Booster Pack. This allows you to increase your party’s level and job rank by one.

Last week, Unity caused a major stir among the community with its intended Runtime Fee policy. The controversial fee received a near-universal negative response, largely from angry developers. This could be why the company has since issued an apology.

Is the damage too far gone?

In a recent post on Twitter, Unity assured people that the team had been listening to feedback. The post goes on to say it apologizes for the “confusion and angst the runtime fee policy we announced on Tuesday caused.”

As a result, the company has now said that it will be “making changes to the policy,” with updates being shared “in a couple of days.” At this stage, we can’t say what Unity has in store, but it’s the hope of many that it will go back on its new pricing plan.

For those who don’t know, last week Unity announced it would be introducing additional fees for developers. Commencing January 1, 2024, this new policy would make it so that studios who have built a game using the toolkit would have to pay an additional cost each time their game is installed.

While it did try to counter immediate backlash by insisting that this would not affect the majority of developers, it was a unanimously unpopular decision as far as the community was concerned.

Further updates from the tech firm backpedaled a little bit by insisting that the new fee would only be applied to new installations. This means that studios would not be charged if someone uninstalled and reinstalled a game, for example.

However, by this point, the damage was already done. Many developers have now sworn off using Unity in the future, but we’ll see whether the upcoming changes to the proposed Runtime Fee can somehow make amends.
